Biden’s Chamberlain Moment

Never give an inch to a tyrant. It’ll just make him want a mile. Or a whole country.

It’s a lesson that British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain learned the hard way, in the build-up to the Second World War.

With a Russian army assembled near the Ukrainian border, President Joe Biden tacitly yielded more than an inch to Vladimir Putin. He offered a considerable slice of Ukraine territory.

Never implicitly tell a tyrant that a piece of land might be there for the taking. He’ll go for all of it.

A 19 January 2022 NBC News article entitled “Biden predicts Russia will invade Ukraine” quoted Biden’s comment on the marshalling of Russian wheeled and track vehicles near the Ukraine border.

‘“My guess is he [Putin] will move in, he has to do something,” said Biden during a news conference marking his first year in office, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine.  The declaration from Biden was striking given the escalating tensions there and the continued efforts by America and its allies to find a diplomatic solution.

Biden said Putin ‘will be held accountable’ and has ‘never have seen sanctions like the ones I promised will be impose’ if Russia makes further moves against Ukraine. He added the U.S. would increase its troop levels in the region, including in Poland, keeping with obligations under the NATO treaty.

But Biden appeared to hedge his threats, distinguishing between a ‘minor incursion’ and a full-blown attack. ‘And it depends on what it does. It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion and we end up having to fight about what to do and not do,’ Biden added.”

It’s not smart to equivocate threats to a tyrant.

Later, in the same article, Biden said:

I think it matters what side of the bed he gets up on in the morning as to what he’s going to do, he added.”

Tyrants plan. They don’t act on impulse. They impulsively favor the aggressive side of the bed.

In another NBC article that posted on January 18, then White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said:

“We believe we’re now at a stage where Russia could at any point launch an attack on Ukraine. I would say that’s more stark than we have been.”

Another way to read “more stark” is “more awake”.

Given the Russian Federation’s history of invading smaller countries, as well as occupying Crimea, why did it take so long to arrive at that “stage”?

Over 100,000 Russian troops assembling near Ukraine would not indicate a field exercise undeway.

It is almost as though the Biden Administration intentionally gave a green light for a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Now why might they have done that?
