FBI Director Christopher Wray got the smackdown he so richly deserved

FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday and did his part to advance the Biden administration’s nefarious agenda. As usual, he dodged and weaved his way through questioning, leaning heavily on his “inability” to discuss ongoing investigations. He was either lying or has no idea what’s going on in the agency he runs. I suspect it’s the former.

In his opening statement, he spoke of the “inspiring” work conducted by the bureau’s 38,000 dedicated employees that no one talks about. Wray told lawmakers the FBI was responsible for removing over 20,000 “bad guys” from the streets last year. He said that agents are pursuing the leadership of the cartels and have intercepted hundreds of kilos of dangerous drugs at the southern border. That, he insisted, was “the real FBI.”

He expressed his frustration that so many focused on “the one or two investigations that seem to capture all the headlines.” First, the number is far more than one or two. Second, these are the most consequential investigations. And third, it’s become clear they have been deliberately mishandled to achieve specific political outcomes. The flagrant abuses of power by those charged with enforcing the law are the reason the public is losing faith in the FBI and other once-highly respected institutions.

By far, the most brutal exchange of the day came with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), a man not known for his subtlety. Gaetz began his questioning by reading the recently revealed July 2017 WhatsApp extortion message from Hunter Biden to Henry Zhao, the president and CEO of Harvest Capital Management, who is closely tied to the Chinese Communist Party.

The message read: “I am sitting here with my father. … I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.”

With a smirk on his face, Gaetz asked, “Sounds like a shakedown, doesn’t it, Director?”

“I’m not going to get into commenting on that,” Wrap replied.

Gaetz pounced. “You seem deeply uncurious about it, don’t you? Almost suspiciously uncurious. Are you protecting the Bidens?”

“Absolutely not,” Wray answered.

“You won’t answer the question about whether or not that’s a shakedown, and everybody knows why you won’t answer it,” Gaetz said. “Because to the millions of people who will see this, they know it is, and your inability to acknowledge that is deeply revealing about you.”

With his remaining time, Gaetz hit the smug FBI director on his agency’s documented abuses of the FISA surveillance system.

Believing he’d found an opportunity to confound the fiery lawmaker, Wray said, “Respectfully, Congressman, in your home state of Florida, the number of people applying to come work for us and devote their lives to working for us, it’s over, up over 100%.”

But the far more agile Gaetz slapped back quickly. “We’re deeply proud of them. And they deserve better than you.”

Asked by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) if there were any undercover FBI agents in or around the U.S. Capitol on January 6, Wray replied that he “does not believe” so. Incredibly, he also said, “I would not call the Mar-a-Lago search a raid.”

Under questioning by Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) about the agency’s proven collaboration with social media companies to suppress content they disagreed with on their platforms, Wray gave an even more disingenuous response. He claimed, “The FBI is not in the business of moderating content or causing any social-media company to suppress or censor.” In light of the evidence revealed by the “Twitter files,” Wray’s remarks were incredibly audacious.

In his July 4 ruling in the Missouri v Biden case, U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty accurately described the federal government’s actions as those from an “Orwellian Ministry of Truth” and called the FBI’s complicity as “arguably the most massive attack against free speech in United States history.”

The unhappy reality for Wray is that, while the vast majority of agency personnel are doing their jobs, its leadership has become thoroughly corrupted. But, as events unfold, their motives are slowly being revealed and the public is losing confidence in the FBI, which has become the enforcement arm of the Democratic Party.

Hopefully, this will translate into a loss of support for Democrats in 2024. But it also gives them an even greater incentive to interfere in the election. Republicans must strike back forcefully. A big part of that is pulling back the curtain and exposing the corruption at the highest levels of our government.

House Republicans are doing just that. If a predator grabs a newt by its tail, the tail will break off and the creature will simply grow a new one. The GOP needs to cut off its head, the current leadership of the FBI and the Department of Justice, or the great American experiment will be over.

  1. “… He was either lying or has no idea what’s going on in the agency he runs. I suspect it’s the former.…”

It can be both, i.e. he is lying (or engaging in lawyerly dissembling) and does not know what is happening in his field offices and headquarters sections, such as what Elvis Chan testified to in the Louisiana and Missouri lawsuit depositions.

  2. What are they waiting for? These hearings are pointless every week. They have enough evidence to take these people down. Are they really going after the culprits or is this all corruption theater?
