The Early Years of Christian Persecution in Ancient Rome: From Nero to Domitian

The history of Christian persecution in ancient Rome is a grim testament to the brutality and intolerance faced by followers of the new faith during the formative years of Christianity. One of the most infamous episodes occurred during the reign of Emperor Nero, who blamed Christians for the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD and subjected them to horrific persecution. Nero ordered Christians to be burned alive as public spectacles, often in the Colosseum, where they became known as “Roman Candles,” serving as entertainment and a deterrent to others considering conversion.

Emperor Domitian, who ruled from 81 AD to 96 AD, continued the legacy of persecution against Christians, boldly declaring himself a deity and demanding divine honors. Under his tyrannical regime, Christians endured unimaginable suffering, cast into dank dungeons and shackled in chains. Families were torn apart, with loved ones banished to the empire’s fringes, condemned to lives of despair and isolation.

For those who refused to worship Domitian as a god and refused calling him “Lord and God,” the punishment was swift and merciless. The Romans employed various methods of execution, including crucifixion, beheading, stoning, burning, drowning, and firing squad (arrows). For some roaring flames consumed their bodies as they were burned alive, their agonized screams echoing through the streets. These brave Christians, labeled “Roman Candles” in mockery, stood firm in their faith, becoming martyrs and enduring symbols of resistance against religious oppression.

The persecution of Christians under Nero and Domitian serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by early believers in the face of tyranny. Their courage and resilience underscore the enduring strength of the human spirit and the unwavering devotion to their faith, even in the darkest moments of persecution. As we reflect on their struggles, we are reminded of the importance of religious freedom and the ongoing fight against oppression in all its forms.
