The Electoral College is a crucial component of the United States presidential election process, but what happens if no candidate receives the required 270 electoral votes to win? This scenario, while rare, has specific procedures outlined in the Constitution to determine the outcome of the election.
In the event that no candidate secures 270 electoral votes, the responsibility of electing the president falls to the United States House of Representatives. However, the House does not vote in the traditional sense, with each member casting an individual ballot. Instead, each state delegation in the House casts one collective vote for president. This means that regardless of a state’s population or the number of representatives it has in the House, each state delegation holds equal weight in this process.
To win the presidency in this situation, a candidate must receive the votes of at least 26 state delegations (a majority of the 50 states). This process ensures that even states with smaller populations have a significant say in the final outcome of the election.
Similarly, if the vice presidential candidate also fails to secure a majority of electoral votes, the election for vice president moves to the United States Senate. In the Senate, each senator casts one vote for vice president. A candidate must receive at least 51 votes (a majority of the 100 senators) to win the vice presidency.
While the scenario of no candidate reaching 270 electoral votes is relatively rare, it underscores the importance of understanding the intricacies of the Electoral College and the procedures in place to determine the election outcome in such circumstances. The Founding Fathers designed these mechanisms to ensure a clear and decisive process for electing the president and vice president, even in complex situations where no candidate achieves an outright majority.

At worst, that would give us a Trump presidency with a Democrat vice president. Probably won’t happen, but we are living in interesting times. We will be fortunate to survive this election, the way the Democrats are acting.
Depends on all the cheating, doesn’t it?
