Glowing adjectives, ad nauseum, aside, the opening parade of boats on the Seine was logistically spectacular. To cohesively collate the seemingly endless, perfectly-spaced boats comprised of the athletes in their nation’s colors and for the announcers to accurately recognize each country was most impressive. On this live-to-the-world production, somewhere, there had to be a magician deciding/ordering which camera/commentator to go next. To the untrained eye, there was no dead-air, screw-ups, miscues or disrupting sabotage.
On the downside:. Too many metal event categories and sub-categories. If break-dancing is a sport why not jitterbugging, Charleston, ballet? Then there’s the costumes/apparel of the competitors. More than a few nations, including some USA teams, did not have their country’s name large enough to be easily recognizable. Finally, the revealing swimsuit and gymnastic, en vogue outfits left no doubt as to the sex of the wearer – perhaps the Olympic Committee might require such skimpy clothing for women boxers….
While wars rage in numerous countries it was comforting to see these talented, law-abiding representatives of different nationalities compete, help each other and honor decorum. Merci beaucoup, mazel tov, congratulations… thank you, France.
