The Pandemic and the New Dogma: An Analysis of Human Behavior and Government Response During COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic was not just a global health crisis; it was also a profound social and psychological event that revealed much about human behavior and government responses under unprecedented pressure. As governments worldwide scrambled to manage the crisis, their methods often resembled the mechanisms of religious dogma—rigid, unquestionable, and enforced with zeal—yet these were sterile of any spiritual or moral grounding. Instead, science or, more accurately, a form of materialism, replaced the role traditionally held by faith or God, guiding public policy and individual behavior with an iron hand.
The New Orthodoxy: Trust the Science
From the outset of the pandemic, the phrase “trust the science” became a mantra. This slogan, often repeated by public health officials and government leaders, was presented as the ultimate truth. Any deviation from this narrative was quickly labeled as misinformation or conspiracy, with dissenters marginalized or silenced. This approach mirrored religious dogma, where questioning the established doctrine is seen as heresy. In this case, however, the doctrine was not spiritual but scientific, or rather, a version of science that brooked no challenge or debate.
Mass Dissemination of Dogma
The mass dissemination of information during the pandemic took on a tone that was not dissimilar to religious proselytism. Governments and media outlets repeated common talking points: trust the experts, wear your mask, stay home, and get vaccinated. The consistency of these messages, delivered with an almost ritualistic repetition, served to reinforce the new orthodoxy. This was not unlike the way religious institutions disseminate teachings, but in this instance, the messages were void of spiritual content and focused purely on compliance with material directives.
Obedience and Moral Judgement
The call for obedience was another striking parallel to religious practices. People were told to obey those in positions of power—public health officials, government leaders, and even celebrities who became unofficial spokespersons for the pandemic response. Those who questioned or defied these directives were often subjected to moral judgment, accused of being selfish, and even of wanting vulnerable populations, like the elderly, to die. This binary moral framing—either you are with us or against us—echoed the dichotomous thinking often found in religious extremism, where dissent equates to moral failing.
The Closing of Churches and the Hypocrisy of Authority
Perhaps one of the most glaring examples of this new dogmatic approach was the decision to close churches while allowing bars and strip clubs to remain open in some places. This paradoxical stance underscored the materialistic priorities of the authorities. Spiritual needs and communal worship, which many found essential for coping with the pandemic’s psychological toll, were deemed non-essential, while venues of physical pleasure were allowed to operate. The hypocrisy deepened as authoritative leaders who imposed these restrictions were often caught breaking the very rules they enforced—getting haircuts, attending social gatherings, and venturing outdoors while telling the public to stay home.
The “Safe and Effective” Mantra and Peer Pressure
The phrase “safe and effective” became the tagline for vaccines, repeated in almost every communication about the pandemic. While the vaccines indeed played a crucial role in managing the crisis, the uncritical repetition of this phrase and the lack of acknowledgment of any potential risks or limitations created an environment where questioning was equated with rebellion. Those who hesitated or refused vaccination were subjected to peer pressure, ostracism, and even punitive measures, further solidifying the new materialistic dogma.
Conclusion: The Sterile Dogma of the Pandemic Response
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed how quickly societies can adopt dogmatic practices in the absence of spiritual or moral frameworks. Governments and institutions enforced a new orthodoxy centered on materialism, science, and compliance, often at the expense of individual liberties, spiritual needs, and open discourse. The methods used—mass dissemination of information, moral judgment, hypocrisy, and peer pressure—bore an uncanny resemblance to the tactics of religious dogma, yet were devoid of any spiritual substance. As we move forward, it is crucial to reflect on these behaviors and consider how to balance scientific guidance with the need for moral and spiritual integrity in times of crisis
