As citizens of each state, we are entrusted with the right and responsibility to vote for our leaders and policies. However, in recent years, the integrity of that process has been called into question due to the growing reliance on electronic voting systems. These systems, while seemingly efficient, have created an increasing level of distrust among voters. Reports of system outages, potential vulnerabilities, and the inability to properly audit votes have left many wondering whether their vote is truly secure. It’s time for us to implore our elected representatives to transition to paper voting only—the tried-and-true method that ensures the security and transparency of our democratic process.
The biggest issue with electronic voting systems is that they are highly susceptible to malfunctions and system outages. We’ve seen instances where voting machines have gone offline during elections, leaving voters frustrated and raising serious questions about whether votes were properly counted. Paper voting, by contrast, is reliable and doesn’t depend on technology that can fail. A pen and paper don’t crash, lose power, or suffer from software glitches. In this era of distrust, we need voting methods that voters can trust to work every time.
One of the most significant drawbacks of electronic voting is the lack of a verifiable paper trail. When electronic votes are cast, there is often no physical evidence that a vote was recorded as intended, making it difficult to conduct thorough audits. In contrast, paper ballots provide a clear, tangible record of each vote, which can be easily reviewed in the event of a recount or audit. This transparency is vital to maintaining public confidence in the electoral process. Without the ability to properly audit elections, how can we be sure the outcomes are legitimate?
Moreover, the growing distrust in electronic voting systems isn’t just about technical issues—it’s about the potential for vulnerabilities and hacking. While electronic systems are marketed as secure, the reality is that no system is 100% immune to manipulation. Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly warned that electronic voting machines could be hacked or tampered with, leading to potential vote alterations. Paper ballots, however, are not vulnerable to such attacks and offer a much-needed layer of security that electronic systems simply cannot match.
At the heart of this issue is a simple fact: voters need to trust the system. Paper ballots, which have been used successfully for centuries, provide the transparency, reliability, and auditability that electronic systems cannot. By demanding that our elected representatives transition to paper voting only, we can help restore public confidence in elections and ensure that every vote is counted accurately. Let’s return to a method that works—one that voters can see, trust, and verify.

Paper ballots. Voting on one day, a national holiday. The purple finger. The only exceptions should be military serving OCONUS.
