The Liberals’ Unintended Consequence

Not that reality matters to them, but if liberals got what they wanted, Trump’s Electoral College landslide would rival Reagan in 1984

One of the issues the left has pushed in the last two decades is getting around the Electoral College. What do they think of that now?

In the aftermath of the 2000 Election, when then Governor George Bush beat then sitting Vice President Al Gore by a whisper, the left has railed against the Electoral College. Their arguments were varied and, as usual, ridiculous. It’s racist, it’s an anachronism from when communications took days or weeks, or it’s anti-democratic.

But I was reviewing the election results, and if the liberals had their way, Donald Trump’s Electoral College win would have been the greatest since Ronald Reagan in 1984. How you ask? Their National Popular Vote movement.

Some history to set this up. The Electoral College has nothing to do with race, communications or the fact it is, by its nature, anti-democratic. It was one of the  compromises between the states in the Constitutional Convention to insure the smaller states (Rhode Island, Maryland) joined the new union. They did not want to be dominated by the large states (New York, Pennsylvania). The (original) purpose of the senate was to represent the states in the federal government, that’s why its members were selected by the legislatures.

The Electoral College was established to ensure each state’s population would have a say in the election of the nation’s highest office. In my younger days I did not understand the wisdom of this part of the Constitution. Then this map was put out in the wake of the 2000 Presidential Election.

The sight scared me. Al Gore won the general vote by winning around twenty major cities in a handful of states. The wisdom of the dead old white dudes comes through every time I look at this.

In the aftermath of the George Bush victory (won by, in my opinion, the release of a picture of a scared five-year-old taken from his family and deported back to Cuba), the liberals were outraged Gore won the vote “of the people” and was not going to be president. And the National Vote movement was started with the belief as Democrats imported more illegal aliens, got them amnesty and/or the vote in other ways, winning the national vote was a fait accompli. Only one thing got in their way, the US Constitution.

To get around this issue, the liberals and RINOs established their group National Popular Vote to get around the constitution and laws. From their website:

The National Popular Vote law will take effect when enacted by states with a majority of the electoral votes (270 of 538). Then, the presidential candidate receiving the most popular votes in all 50 states and DC will get all the electoral votes from all of the enacting states. That is, the candidate receiving the most popular votes nationwide will be guaranteed enough electoral votes to become President.

In other words if I vote for a Republican in Colorado, and the Democrat gets the majority, he gets all of Colorado’s Electoral College votes? That’s the BS being put out, but the purpose is to ensure Democrats will always win the presidency. Well, how did that work out this month?

Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have voted for this compact between the states. All but two of the states Kamala Harris won on November 5th. If this was in effect this year Donald Trump would have won the Electoral College votes from California (54), New York 28, and Illinois (19), plus 14 other states (and the District of Columbia), totaling 521 votes and destroying the “Blue Wall.” Kamala Harris would limp in with 17 Electoral College votes (New Hampshire and Virginia), without her home state of California in the “win” column (in spite of her winning the popular vote of the state 58.6% to 38.2%).

I wonder where Al Franken, Michael Steele, Janet Napolitano, and Eric Holder are now demanding the majority vote of the people count…

Oh, yea.

The facts are this Compact of the States will never become reality. To reach the number of 270 Electoral College votes to become “active” would take two massive states (Texas, 40 votes, and Florida, 30 votes) entering, of which neither is inclined to do so. Or a large group of smaller states deliberately destroying any influence they have in electing the president every four years, insuring Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and a few other Blue hell holes make the choice. I don’t see either event happening.

Not to mention the compact would be on shaky constitutional grounds. One could say it complies with Article 2 (“Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors…”), it directly conflicts with Article 4 Section 4 (“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government…”

An academic exercise, I concede, but it will be interesting to see if anyone on the left is asked about this issue in the future. I think we know the answer.
