On Christmas night in 2010, in Iraq our base came under heavy attack from insurgents who launched 92 rockets, reportedly of Iranian origin dating back to the 1970s. The attackers orchestrated a coordinated assault, positioning the rockets in civilian areas such as schools and places of worship to conceal their activities.
These rockets while unsophisticated served a purpose. Far from being dumb, they launched by timers fashioned from common household items like kitchen egg timers and 9 volt batteries, aimed with the intent to cause chaos and destruction. The randomness of their targeting made it largely a matter of chance for any rocket to hit our base, let alone cause casualties. Unfortunately, fate dealt a tragic blow that night.
During that night’s onslaught, one of our comrades was in communication with his wife and family over Skype, sharing the joyous occasion despite the circumstances. Tragically, the connection abruptly terminated, leaving his loved ones horrified. It was a cruel stroke of fate that a rocket found its way, striking the very trailer where he lived and ending his life.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by servicemen and women in conflict zones. It underscores the indiscriminate nature of war and the toll it takes, not just on those directly involved but also on the families and loved ones left behind.
The loss of a fellow soldier, witnessed through an internet connection half a world away on a screen by his family, resonates as a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel in service to their country. It’s a testament to the bravery and dedication of those who risk everything for the cause of peace and security.”
So, as you enjoy the Christmas holiday this year, remember those who have have less joyous memories of Christmas. While we may not make it known, many of us remember what evil looks like and does. The veneer of civilization is very thin.
