Western Civ On the Brink

Who stands for the West?

It certainly seems not Jesse. So is this what we’re seeing today? If we can’t explain Western Civilization’s importance to our children how do we explain it to those beyond our borders?

Are we simply casting aside Western Civilization’s good, done by those who came before, because the “progressives” among us maintain it doesn’t represent the “here and now” but rather the patriarchal past? However, if not for many of those patriarchs how did we get to where we are now? Are all their good works to be thrown to the “multicultural” wolves? “Hard times create(ed) strong men.”

Arts, literature, justice, manners, ethics and more were formed using the light Western Civilization provided. Passed to us by the early Greeks, what other culture has more positively molded the development of the civilized world? Look around, certainly none that I can think of. “Strong men create good times.”

50 years ago I was a History major and I wonder why our country continues to try the failed examples of the past. A book by Victor Davis Hansen, Who Killed Homer, may provide answers. Simply, he maintains it’s “moral relativism and a glorified material culture.” If he’s right and we take for granted the blessings we derive from Western core values without understanding the responsibilities associated with them, we diminish them. “Striving to better, oft we mar what’s well.” (Shakespeare) Unfortunately then, “Good times create weak men.”

So is that how we arrived at this state of “anti” this and that? Within a WWII book titled With the Old Breed, there’s a remarkable line about the critical factor in combat stress, i.e., “…it is the duration rather than the severity.” Have we reached a point where previous generations have been continually bombarded with revisionist history? Are we in danger of losing our moral sensibility to those who choose to follow rather than lead? Have we created lemmings by an inbred irrelevant academia? “Weak men create hard times.”

But the cycle will begin again and hopefully soon. “Hard times create strong men.”
