Having lost the 2024 presidential election, the Democratic Party has been forced to lick its wounds in the corner and try to figure out what it did wrong.
The op-ed pages – especially in left-wing news sites, which is most of them – are awash in misplaced anger.
The most common primal scream runs along these lines: “How could we lose to a man twice impeached, who was convicted of 34 felonies including rape and financial fraud, and who started an insurrection against the United States?”
It’s the right question. But today’s Democrats are incapable of introspection; they are outright hostile to the scientific method. The one right answer to the question is the one they will not consider:
“Because the American public knew that all of the above charges were fraudulent.”
No Democrat will admit that their lawfare and their impeachments were misguided from the start. They won’t even consider the fact that their many kangaroo courts were so blatantly fictional that the American people saw through them all.
The public saw E. Jean Carroll’s ridiculous charges of a rape in a department store fitting room when she was just a young clothing designer in the medieval kingdom of the Franks, and knew it was made up out of whole cloth.
The public saw Deep State prosecutors put a man on trial for a meaningless banking misdemeanor long past its statutes of limitations, make up a felony from it, and try to bankrupt him in penalty for a victimless offense, and knew that it would never have gotten anyone else so much as a parking ticket.
The public watched the Left attack not just President Trump but his campaign and his supporters as well, calling them insurrectionists because a few dozen rally attendees were ginned up (by FBI plants, we later learned) to walk into the Capitol building so that the Democrats could call it a revolution – as if anyone on God’s green earth would attempt to overthrow a modern government while completely unarmed and staying within the velvet tourist ropes.
The public knew that most if not all of the blasts against President Trump were a sham all along, and this knowledge helped the public to side with him, rather than oppose him.
But that’s still not the whole picture. A presidential election is still a presidential election, so the public had to evaluate this choice, between Donald J. Trump and Kamala Harris. And there too, the Democrats in their attempt at self-reflection are missing the mark.
The Democrats cast blame at the White House, saying either that Joe Biden should have stayed in, or that he should have gotten out earlier in the year, so that Harris could have had more time as the candidate. Or that the party should have had an open convention and chosen someone else in August, or that they should have allowed a real primary season so they could find out whether they had someone electable.
And yes indeed, maybe one of those options might have turned out better for them, though we’ll never know for sure. It’s entirely possible that they benefited from this three-month campaign. Perhaps if the GOP had had four or six or nine months to concentrate their message on the Democrat nominee, it would have worked out even worse for the Democrats. We will never know.
They ask, what if we had spent that billion dollars – that is, the billion dollars we know about, not counting all the soft money and in kind contributions that they don’t declare, probably two or three times the billion they admit too – in some other way? What if they had spent it more wisely?
This too is an interesting question. The Harris-Walz campaign threw money around like it was Chinese government checks at a Biden family trade mission to Beijing.
They paid petition gatherers and door-to-door canvassers; they paid food and transportation for welcoming crowds at airports and for their pretend rallies to counter President Trump’s. The Harris-Walz campaign paid celebrity endorsers for personal appearances and spent a hundred grand to build a copycat studio for the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, whatever the heck that was.
In short, the Harris-Walz campaign wasted a billion dollars that we know of, in order to do worse than Biden did with virtually every demographic. Maybe it wasn’t the best idea to nominate a woman so universally hated that she was forced to drop out of the 2020 primaries before a single primary was held, because she wasn’t running second or third, but was dead last, often running behind “none of the above” and the pollster’s pet ferret.
They admit this error, which does bring them closer to the mark, but they still miss the biggest issue.
In the end, it’s not the fact that they ran a bad candidate, or that their commercials missed the mark, or that they wasted campaign funds on the wrong things. It’s not that they had too short a campaign or failed to communicate their message. It’s not that they picked a fool for a nominee and an even worse one for a runningmate, though they certainly did. Nobody could have saved their ticket this time.
The one thing that the modern Democrat will not allow himself to consider is that they are wrong on the issues. Not one issue, not ten, not twenty, but all of them.
On every subject from the social issues to the economy, on everything from domestic policy to international, the modern Democratic Party’s platform has been demonstrated to be suicidal for any nation that adopts it.
Open borders are killing Europe and Great Britain; of course they’re killing us too. Overgrown bureaucracy and crippling taxes have driven the world’s manufacturing to Red China, this factory flight is hurting us as much as it’s hurting the rest of the developed world.
And these deranged, malevolent social policies – advocating taxpayer funded abortion on demand at all times and in all cases… allowing boys who just call themselves girls to beat real girls in sporting competitions, ruining everything from girls’ sports to international Olympics and often putting the actual female competitors in girls’ sports in life-threatening danger… and most shockingly of all, proposing to treat confused children who might have a slight case of gender dysphoria by lopping off body parts and condemning them to a life of sterility, pain and depression – these policies are so warped, no one but a lunatic could support them.
Democrat economic policies have destroyed the value of savings, shockingly lowered the average standard of living, made such simple basics as groceries and the family car unaffordable for a huge swath of what used to be the middle class.
This is why the Democrat ticket for President was defeated.
And that’s what they cannot admit to themselves, and will not admit in public to the world.
This convoluted set of policies – from overthrowing energy that works in favor of energy that doesn’t, from sending manufacturing abroad to importing unskilled migrants to pad our welfare rolls, from destroying our schools with woke policies and the DEI agenda to spreading such cancers in our workplaces as well – has been exposed for the utterly destructive platform it is.
The American people have seen through the Democrats at last.
The Democrats have long since outlived their usefulness as a political party. If they were capable of honest self-reflection, they would come to the only logical conclusion: that the Democratic Party should dissolve, and its members should regroup and try to establish new parties with at least some rational, helpful, justifiable policies at their core.
The odds of such a result, however, are sadly nonexistent. The Democrats have an unlimited funding base and the power of their status as a major party in American politics, and that means they will be with us forever.
So all we can do is watch and wait to see if they do ever realize that their problem isn’t politics at all, but their own policies.
Don’t hold your breath.
