We May See The WNBA Renamed In The Future Due To Recent Comments
I made the case in Part 1 last year that many professional sports-particularly the NBA and WNBA-have become just about unwatchable.
The amount of hand checks, hip checks, travels, double dribbling, bouncing into or off of the defender or offensive player, the Lebron bash and repeat mode of closing on the basket, followed by a palm or travel or double dribble—is enough to drive a person crazy. Like playground ball without the organization…
But a sense of guilt resulting from an acknowledged pretty small data sample forced me to revisit the issue on the WNBA side. So, I’ve now watched almost twenty games and there is good news and bad news.
The good news is the players play at a relatively high level, notwithstanding that it seems odd to see so many 3-point shots and yet no dunks: they are allowed to dunk but apparently can’t.
I think it was Shaq who opined that it would be more exciting if they lowered the rim (which drew derision, dismissal and a pshaw, because “girl power”) and reduced some of the 3s.
The bad news is the unacceptable level of just plain violence, the dreadful indecisive refereeing and also the refereeing that seems contrived or perpetrated to achieve an end continues.
A recent experience may have been the worst yet. Indian Fever at home were taking on the Las Vegas Aces and it was all Indiana in the first half, which closed with them holding a 46-24 lead on >60% shooting.
Aliyah Boston-in particular-was awesome in the first half, dominating in the paint and pretty much anchoring the Fever defense which seems markedly improved with a new batch of players that worked together to move the ball on offense like clockwork, considering how relatively inexperienced with each other the team is in this still early season.
Coming out for the second half, I made a mental note that the Aces needed to get their best player–Aja Wilson–into the game by doing more off the ball movement where she could get loose from Boston–who was dominating her.
I had a crazy thought that we would see if the Refs were going to be up to their tricks, as one option was for Boston and the Fever to get in foul trouble early, Wilson to get to the line more through fouls in the paint, resulting in the Aces getting into the penalty situation early in the quarter that really disrupts the timing of a run and gun team, while saving clock and providing relatively free points for the team that is down.
It was shocking to see Boston get two quick, chintzy fouls out of halftime that amounted to four and resulted in her sitting down for most of the third quarter and on into the fourth. The Aces were into the bonus based on fouls before the quarter was even half over.
Fever Coach White had a technical called on her after a particularly ridiculous foul call where it looked like there was no contact at all.
Wilson got untracked but of the 22 free throw attempts by the Aces, Wilson had 60% or 13 of them, 11 more than any of her teammates and 9 more than the highest Fever player.
While it did not matter in the end as the Fever were dominate, it was as stinky as gas station sushi and somewhat of a trend or theme that I’ve witnessed now in several Fever games: particularly with an all-female referee crew.
In an earlier loss where the Fever had the late lead, the refereeing got worse as the game went on. In one video on-line Clark was fouled at least 4 times on the same play–resulting in a no call, an eventual turnover and a Fever loss–after leading for most of the game.
In another game Indiana dominated almost every category but the same outcome resulted in the same way–and-OBTW-Caitlin Clark did not play due to her groin injury. It is somewhat of a very huge side or truly mainline issue that Clark has now missed half of the Fever games-like 8 total-which is a huge issue.
Which brings us to this year and recent commentary on a ridiculous topic that has outed league officials, coaches and players alike, as well as the LSMBTGANF that covers the league, as being woke idjiots that are as quote worthy as Dufus McGee or the Three Stooges.
Indian Fever’s Sophie Cunningham was asked about the issue of trans females (who are fully equipped males) playing in the WNBA, keeping in mind the W stands for Women’s to ensure nobody confuses the league with the men (I guess.) Her commentary covered Title IX concerns, the issue of protecting girl’s sports and locker room privacy.
That such a straightforward question and answer could generate controversy epitomizes 21st century America. From the piece:
A 2025 Gallup Survey recorded responses to the following statement:
“Transgender athletes should only be allowed to play on sports teams that match their birth gender.”
Overall, 69% of American adults surveyed agreed. By political party, 90% of Republicans, 72% of independents and 41% of Democrats agreed.
Similar results were observed when participants were asked to respond to the proposal of requiring birth sex on government IDs like driver’s licenses.
Cunningham’s clarity on the issue is not matched by many WNBA players and coaches–including her own—who opined that she is “not educated on the issue.” Also, she who was in a conventional marriage but has since divorced and is now in an unconventional marriage.
But the looney comments are flying and are now extending to fans as well here, here, here, and here.
Shaq took a bunch of heat, hate and discontent over his comments about lowering the basket to enable dunks, but it seems that many would be OK to allow trans females (who are males) which would likely result in the addition of dunking to the league.
Which would frankly be utterly ridiculous and nonsensical and so 21st century American sports lunacy.
Meanwhile the topic of my previous article—the violence and dangerous plays that are not being policed by the league—continue. It already cost the league significant revenue as Caitlan Clark missed some 31 of 44 games in 2025 and has been hit or miss due to a sore back in 2026.
The league has simply not been up to the task of policing players who continue to commit violent fouls and non-basketball plays, even after blatantly obvious and egregious—dangerous—fouls that include multiple eye pokes, hip checks, blind-side moving screens, swats in the head while airborne, fists in the throat, chokeholds, elbows to the head and others too numerous to delineate.
Were this happening in the NBA there would be fights breaking out for each incident. It’s not limited or focused on Clark, as her teammate Cunningham has also been a target of late.
These are not basketball plays and should be met with massive fines and multi-game suspensions for dangerous contact.
I always said during Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretsky and Michael Jordan’s dominance that they were one hit away from being sidelined for life, but their teammates stepped up and kept things from getting out of hand.
Here are a few pictures of such contact that stand-alone: you don’t need to be a basketball afficionado or expert to figure out that a basketball player flying through the air who is swatted in the head or clotheslined by the neck faces serious injury trying to land.
A worse play from an injury standpoint is when a player shoots a jumper and the opposing player steps into their landing space: which happens with increasing frequency to Clark. Or being kneed in the groin, punched in the neck, poked in the eye, body checked to the ground while at full speed.
I don’t know, Vern. Those who dislike Clark for whatever reason constantly beat the drum about her making too much noise about fouls. These plays are all potential career ending dangerous plays.
Clark did not miss 31 games in 2025 because she was not in shape or used to playing a full season—she did not miss a game in college–while playing at the same, full-out pace we’ve seen in the WNBA.
I did watch some of the WNBA All-Star Game: it was just as useless as the NBA version, with very little defense and very atrocious play overall from the “best of the best.”
There has been a recent 10M challenge issued by Clay Travis to the WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces to play a High School State Champion Boys Team which mimics a previous embarrassment where the American Women’s Soccer team lost to a group of 15-year-old boys.
We will see what happens with that going forward. Suffice it to say we have not heard the last of the WNBA problems and challenges, not the least of which is what they are going to do to protect their “golden Goose.”
Which is the only way they are going to be able to stop being a drain on their big brother–the NBA—which has been underwriting them for decades to the tune of tens of millions of dollars in losses yearly.
