Book Review: Kellyanne “Here’s the Deal.” A Memoir

I highly recommend Kellyanne Conway’s “Kellyanne Conway, Here’s the Deal, a Memoir, “Simon and Schuster, 2022.

Kellyanne, or “Kel” as President Trump called her, tells her life story growing up in Atco, a small town in southern New Jersey, between Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Her father left the family when Kellyanne was three years old, but she does not attack or disparage her father, and re-connects with him at her Confirmation.

She was raised by her mother, grandmother, and aunts in a close Catholic, Italian family. She started working at age twelve at a blueberry farm boxing blueberries. She did well in school, went to Trinity College and George Washington Law School in Washington DC.

The best part of the book is her stories about President Trump. She met him when she and her husband, George Conway, bought a condo in one of Trump’s buildings. Trump attended the condo meetings and was aware of all the issues that arose.

President Trump appointed Kellyanne to run his 2016 campaign against Crooked Hillary. She is the first woman to manage a winning presidential campaign. Kellyanne admits that in her career she was groped, insulted, and demeaned BUT that President Trump always treated her well and respected her. She does say that Trump does not take notes but remembers everything, and she adds she sometimes wished he did not remember everything.

She describes President Trump as smart, generous, funny, direct, and supportive of her, especially during the Twitter Rage by Kellyanne’s husband, George Conway.

The book is instructive on the 2020 election. Since Kellyanne ran the 2016 campaign successfully it seemed that she would run the 2020. But trouble started after President Trump won by those who wanted to claim credit for the 2016 win. The chief culprit is Jared Kushner, the ever present son-in-law, who acted as if he was president, dropping in any meeting he chose and working on any issue he chose. He froze Kellyanne out of important White House issues.

Kushner appointed his man, Brad Parscale, to run the campaign, but Trump fired Parscale in July 2020. Parscale worked from his Florida office instead of being in Washington DC.

Kushner and Parscale raised over one billion dollars for the campaign, but they spent much of if before the crucial final months when saturation advertising is necessary. It appears that Kushner and Parscale also engaged in “leaking” news, along with Steve Bannon who was fired in 2017.

Kellyanne does not mince words. She says Reince Priebus, pal of Paul Ryan, and Jason Chafets, all ran away from Trump when the Billy Bush “grope” tape was released. Just a coincidence that a “Bush” participated in trying to take down Trump.

There are interesting anecdotes. During a 2017 inauguration dinner, Bill Clinton walked up to Kellyanne, while Crooked walked by scowling, to congratulate Kellyanne on running a successful campaign. Imagine Crooked’s husband congratulating and chatting up the woman who beat Crooked. Bubba the Hound.

Governor Andrew Cuomo told Kellyanne that Preet Bharara, Obama’s US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, was “Schumer’s man.” Trump fired Bharara.

Kellyanne complains about MSNBC and CNN. I do not understand why she went on MSNBC’s Nicole Wallace show and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. Who watches those shows? Wallace got her MSNBC gig by sabotaging and leaking bad news about Sarah Palin when Wallace was hired by the McCain campaign to help Palin. Kellyanne complains about Wallace and Blitzer so why go on their shows? No sane Republican or conservative or Trump voter would waste time watching MSNBC and CNN.

Kellyanne also deals with the McCain and Romney campaign consultants who made lots of money and ran lousy campaigns. Some of those losers then formed the Lincoln Project and raised over one hundred million dollars in 2020 to attack President Trump. With “Republicans” like these who needs Democrats?

Kellyanne discusses her husband, George Conway, a successful New York attorney, who first supported Trump, and wanted the Solicitor General’s job. Trump offered Conway the job as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division, and important prestigious position. Conway turned it down. Conway then went on a Twitter rampage for the next three years attacking President Trump, his policies, and his mental state. In addition to about 90,000 anti-Trump tweets, Conway wrote op-eds for the New York Times to attack Trump. Conway also joined the “Republican” losers at the Lincoln Project but did not share in the one hundred million those boys raised.

The Lincoln Project is still in business, attacking Trump Republicans such as JD Vance and Elise Stefanik, and asking for money.

The Lincoln Project: Home

One would think the Lincoln Project boys would have slithered away after one of its founders, John Weaver, was accused of sexual harassment of twenty-one young men. But no, they are still in business.

Kellyanne says she does not understand why Conway attacked Trump while she was Counselor to the President. He was attacking her indirectly. Sometimes the answer is the obvious: George Conway is a jerk, and as President Trump said: “the husband from hell.”

It seems that Conway wanted to get Kellyanne fired or have her resign so she could not help President Trump. He succeeded, along with Jared Kushner.

Kellyanne resigned her position with Trump so she could deal with her four young children because of the conduct of George Conway and resulting publicity about the state of her marriage that was harmful to the children.

Given all the issues and problems with the 2020 election, as described in Mollie Hemingway’s “RIGGED, How the Media, Big Tech, and the Democrats Seized Our Elections.” Regnery 2021, President Trump would have been better served with Kellyanne running his campaign.

Too bad for Trump and our country, Trump needed Kellyanne to run his campaign

  1. I sure hope she comes back and runs Trump’s next campaign. Kellyanne Conway did more than any other campaign manager did, to win, and she always had a fantastic answer when facing the media. She never let them take her to the woodshed. She took them. Impressive, and I love that smile. The thing that I think I like about her most, is what comes out of her mouth. she looks like a good ole country girl, just with a heck of a brain and wit between those ears. That is one great combination. I love that about her.
