Has Fox News Gone To The Dark Side?

Brian Kilmeade Sean Hannity Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Lauren Boebert
Fox News host calls GOP mutineers against McCarthy ‘insurrectionists’ and then hurriedly walks back the barb
January 6, 2023, 1:44 AM
I spent 14 years traveling to Washington, DC, briefing members of the House and the Senate on “mission critical” issues. I would go into detail, but then the powerful would know who I am, and I don’t have time or money to provide full time security for me or my extended family. Let’s just say I know full well I kicked the dog that guards “the swamp.” And the very last time I went, when I got home, I got a phone call “out of the blue.” I was offered a one year, six figure contract, conducting an audit on an “out of control” government contract. The firm was a well known DOD contractor and I would be working in…what for it…Baghdad. Since no one really knows how many contractors work for the federal government, how much money they are paid, or in my case, how many have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, I declined the offer. Here is why.
While many quote un quote conservatives in this country parrot GOP talking points told to them by Fox News hosts, I for one, know full well GOP talking points first have to clear several levels of “consultants.” Today, the “Freedom Caucus,” i.e. the above referenced Lauren Boebert and 19 other members of the House who refuse to vote for Kevin McCarthy, DO SO because they do not trust McCarthy to remove the “consultants” from the political process. Those consultants are all funded by “federal contractors” who also fund every law firm that makes up “Lobby Row” on D.C.’s famous “K Street.” To be sure, if you want to succeed in Congress, do not stray too far from the lobbyist on “K Street.” Again, here is why.
When the first year members of the House and Senate are sworn into office, the GOP and DNC convene “party only” meetings in their own auditorium. No press…no Politico or Hill reporters allowed. To make the numbers easy, assume 80 new members in each Congress, 40 are GOP and 40 are DNC. In the GOP auditorium, the party leader, the whip and third in charge all take turns speaking. The same happens at the DNC auditorium. Both parties say the following:
“Welcome to Congress, we identified you as candidates. We recruited you. We raised money for you. We campaigned for you. Now that you are here, meet the people who will KEEP YOU HERE.” The exit doors open and 400 government contractors walk in the auditorium…eager to give the new members their business cards and personal phone numbers. The biggest of the contractors are the companies who sole business is to live off the government “teet.”
Of the BIG FIVE at the Pentagon, only Boeing has any business outside of the Defense Budget. Without the Federal Budget in general and the Department of Defense Budget in specific, Raytheon, Northrup, General Dynamics and Lockheed would not have any revenue, let alone business. And that of course would not be good for America or the world. Who will build the spy satellites, the missiles, the tanks, the fighter jets, the stealth bombers, the aircraft carriers…if we did not have the BIG FIVE? And inside of just their first month in office, the new members realize who they really work for.
The 750,000 constituents take a back seat about half of the time…not to the contractors, not to K Street Lobbyists, not to consultants. The newbies find out REAL QUICK they must spend half their time in person and on the phone…raising money for THE POLITICAL PARTY. Both parties make this “fund raising” decision very simple. Just like any sales job, the new member has a “first year quota” they must raise. The sooner they hit the mark, the sooner they can get back to the “business of the people.” But if they DO NOT hit the quota, they must do the “business of the party,”…until they DO hit their quota. All too often, to hit their quota, a new member reaches out to the 400 best new friends…they met at the “party orientation.” To be sure:
“the Swamp giveth and the Swamp taketh away.”
Which brings us to Kevin McCarthy. A few years back, McCarthy got caught up in a scandal where he was cheating on his wife with a new hot member of Congress. This is the sort of thing Sean Hannity knows all about…but I digress. McCarthy lost some leadership duties until he “reclaimed” his mojo. Now that he is back, the Freedom Caucus sees their ONLY OPPORTUNITY to hold House leadership accountable
NOT to Consultants
NOT to Contractors
NOT to the GOP…
…but to the American People.
And while McCarthy has a laundry list of promises he campaigned on …but can’t possibly keep, the Freedom Caucus has kept it simple. Here is the one “R” and four “B’s”…
Reform the Rules Committee
Fix the Border
Balance the Budget
Boost domestic energy production
Investigate and if need be, prosecute the Biden Family.
That said, no one should be surprised that 20 members of Congress, who can collectively hold up McCarthy’s nomination, have made their stand to drain the swamp. Isn’t that what FOX NEWS keeps talking about?
Hannity and Kilmeade have been talking about draining the swamp…even before Donald Trump came on the scene. But now that 20 members of the House have SENT A LIFELINE OUT OF THE SWAMP, for the rest of the House of Representatives, Fox News has nothing but criticism for the Freedom Caucus! This reminds me of a gaggle of reporters in an NFL locker room who don’t ask the hard questions, because they have editors who would fire them for ostracizing/embarrassing the BIG STAR on the Team.
I get that Kevin McCarthy is one of the BIG GATORS in the swamp. I get that FOX NEWS wants to talk to him and his great haircut and shiny suit. But if Kevin McCarthy is the Speaker of the House, and does nothing to drain the swamp, what was the point of the last election? The Freedom Caucus doesn’t have 218 votes for anyone else. Sean Hannity hammered Lauren Boebert on that fact. But Hannity missed the point…probably because it was not written on his teleprompter. Brain Kilmeade also missed the point…probably because it was not written on his teleprompter. When confronted by a member of the Freedom Caucus, both FOX NEWS hosts look and sound small and stupid. Lauren Boebert doesn’t need a teleprompter. The truth is written on her heart. Keep the faith and BE GOOD

Well done piece IMO. I knew we were losing Fox when Brett Baier prematurely called AZ for Biden with almost 900,000 votes still to be counted if I remember. And they blew the House prediction also.
As for McCarthy, I only hope he becomes a solid Speaker and not a hand-puppet of The Swamp. There needs to be a dramatic change in Congress and perhaps, hopefully, we’ll begin to see it happen with the House.
Now if we can only rid ourselves of Mitch and Rona.
Fox News has been on the Dark Side for a long time. They were all in on McCain in 2008, attacking anyone that would challenge him from the right. Then in 2012, Fox was right there again promoting Mitt Romney and attacking conservatives. The one thing that you can’t do on Fox is attack the GOP from the right. You can bash Democrats all day, but calling the GOP to account is not allowed.
Look at 2016. Fox was all in for Jeb! until he collapsed. Then they had a tingle down their leg over Marco Rubio’s thirst place finish in Iowa, until he collapsed and it became a two man race between Cruz and Trump. Only then did they opt for Trump, thinking he would be more malleable for the establishment than Cruz and went all in for Trump.
The lone exception is Tucker Carlson. The only reason that he can is that he is too big to fire. Carlson has more credibility than the rest of Fox combined. There are a few weekend hosts, like Bongino, that can attack from the right, but not many and none but Carlson in the main lineup.
I’m not saying that Fox is always wrong, but that we shouldn’t view them as just an honest arbiter of news. They have an agenda too. Is it better than the rest of news media, which is leftist to the core? Sure. But it is far from unbiased and they seek to desperately put their thumb on the scales in favor of the establishment. We should not forget it. This isn’t new, but something that stretches back decades.
Art,
Thanks for these thoughts.
I appreciate the time you took.
Anyone who has been in Washington as long as McCarthy has…is too far gone for any real change.
Remember that everyone in Washington is ‘getting paid’ by the swamp.
They give our tax dollars to their family and friends.
Until we cycle out ALL THE BASTARDS, and put a leash on the defense contractors, nothing will change.
Robert
Yes, very well done. I didn’t know how well Lauren Boebert could speak, until this negotiation with the suit guy. Same with all the 20. They don’t need Fox News. They will get their news dispersed out into the through all the sites on the web.
I didn’t know that about Kilmeade, but I never cared for Hannity. He has a wet thumb in the air, or a collar on his neck, not sure which.
Given that he loves having Lindsay Graham on so much, I’m betting it is a fake diamond studded collar, leash and whip.
