Any discussion of citizenship and Christian discipleship is likely to terrify the Human Secularist Totalitarians who fear an imaginary theocracy while they give away their every liberty and freedom to all powerful administrative State. Regardless, one unity between an American citizen and a Christian disciple is the focus on the individual. Consequently, when almost 200 million of us look for help both to save the country and serve our faith, we need to look in the mirror. Individuals must act independently. Courageously. Boldly. Lovingly.
Individuals become disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. His innermost circle of 12 are named individually in the Bible. Individuals choose to believe or not. Individuals choose to read the Bible, participate in a body of Believers, and have a personal relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Individuals face judgment when they die.
If an individual American thinks, speaks, and lives as a Christian, that person finds him or herself at odds with our Culture. Because five of seven institutions which shape our culture and American Civilization are controlled by Human Secularist Totalitarians, any Christian who actually lives as a disciple of Jesus is a missionary an environment controlled by hostiles. The individual may try to live in the bubble of their church family, but if they venture out anywhere in public – even across the rural Bible Belt of the South – they will find criticism in the least and persecution at the worst.
American Christians aren’t being burned at the stake just yet, but that doesn’t mean the Human Secularist Totalitarians aren’t stocking up on the cultural cancelling, career ending, financial limiting, etc. equivalents of cord wood and matches.
So, what’s an individual American Christian to do?
First, figure out if you are a Christian American or an American Christian. What is the adjective to what is your essence?
Second, pray, read, and chat about what is the reason for your existence. Why are you here alive now? What is God’s current purpose for your life?
Then, set about doing what you are supposed to do. Do it as a faithful, cheerful, brave disciple. Eleven of Jesus’ inner twelve died horrible, violent deaths willingly because they had seen and spoken with the Messiah who physically rose from the dead. We are unlikely to serve as martyr’s, but we should, individually, come to terms with that prospect and the threat to our most beloved family and friends. It has happened before. It’s happening now in the many places Christians are severely persecuted.
Do the hard stuff, like love your enemies. Yet, don’t surrender to your enemies. Don’t compromise with them. Face them with kindness and civility as you boldly speak the truth in lovingkindness to them. Oppose them when they are wrong about the sensitive subjects of sexuality, family, and marriage.
The plumb line for right and wrong is found in written word – which cleaves like a sword – in the Holy Bible. It isn’t a mystery which is understandable to priests or prophets alone. As William Tyndale wrote, a ploughboy can know the Scriptures.
Seek the Kingdom of God in this life in how you live. You will be different in a good way.
When you can, speak to the consciences of both the enemies and those ignorant of Christianity. Don’t lose confidence.
There are so many examples. From St. Augustine’s recounting of how one Christian martyr ended gladiators fighting to the death to the Mama Bears speaking up and running for school board to protect their children.
It starts with just one man or woman. William Wilberforce was the only vote in Parliament to end slavery across the British Empire. He prevailed until slavery was stopped. Rosa Parks was one woman who got arrested for defying de jure segregation. The Civil Rights Movement was victorious.
Recently, one coach refused to be denied his freedom of religion to pray, as an individual, on a football field. He won in court. Likewise, a Christian baker’s freedom of conscience was upheld. Conversely, across 3,000 counties in the U.S. only one county clerk refused to give a marriage license to two men after the Supreme Court invented the right of homosexual “marriage.” She was fired. Her reward for her profile in courage will come later.
Whether you are exercising your Christianity or your state and U.S. citizenship, do it even if no one else will.
If you don’t act as a sovereign citizen, you and your descendants will lose the Rule of Law and all the good that has made America – America.
If you don’t act as Christian, then the Lord will expand His kingdom elsewhere. God reconciles all things to Himself. America is subject to the moral calculations and the consequences of her actions.
Be a majority of one.
