The Great Egg Debacle: How Emotion and Lobbyists Scrambled Common Sense

Welcome to Michigan, where the price of eggs isn’t just high—it’s downright insulting. While Ohioans are shelling out $4 for a dozen, Michiganders are left wondering if their $8 eggs come with a golden yolk. Spoiler: they don’t. What we’re witnessing is the fallout of poorly thought-out legislation, fueled by emotional activism and lobbyists wielding oversized checkbooks. And who’s to blame? Weak politicians too scared to stand up for common sense and too eager to virtue-signal their way into the good graces of advocacy groups.

Let’s start with the “cage-free” movement that drove this mess. Sure, the idea of happier hens clucking away in open fields is nice, but the reality is far less charming. These “cage-free” hens are crammed into barns with thousands of other birds, pecking each other to death in a competition for space and food. Studies show that cage-free poultry often suffers higher rates of disease, parasitic infections, and even cannibalism. Yet, thanks to the Humane Society and other animal rights lobbyists, this is now Michigan’s standard. Because nothing says “progress” like trading one set of animal welfare problems for another while doubling egg prices.

Of course, none of this happens without spineless governors and lawmakers who happily bow to pressure from these groups. Rather than pushing back and considering the economic impact on families already struggling with inflation, they signed off on laws that mandate cage-free eggs for all. Meanwhile, states like Ohio, which didn’t jump on the legislative bandwagon, are keeping their prices reasonable. Michigan, however, decided it needed to be a “leader” in animal welfare—never mind that consumers are paying the price, literally.

And what about the middle class, the backbone of Michigan’s economy? For many families, eggs are a cheap source of protein—one of the few affordable staples left during record-high inflation. But now, thanks to politicians who care more about their lobbyist buddies than their constituents, even basic groceries are out of reach for some. Do these lawmakers think the average family has time to care about the square footage of a chicken’s living space when they can barely afford to fill their gas tank? Priorities, people.

In the end, Michigan’s leadership has handed us a self-manufactured problem. Weak-willed politicians, driven by emotion and lobbyists, have once again proven they’re more interested in optics than outcomes. While Ohio laughs over their $4 eggs, we’re stuck paying double for a misguided moral crusade. So, the next time you’re standing in the grocery aisle, staring at those $8 cartons, remember: this is what happens when you elect stupid governors. Let’s hope Michigan voters do better next time—assuming they can afford to.
