Censorship: The Favorite Tool of Hypocrites in Power

Ah, censorship—America’s favorite unconstitutional tradition, wielded by both political parties whenever it suits their agenda. For all the high-minded talk about “protecting democracy” and “defending the Constitution,” the truth is simple: the people in power will always try to silence those who challenge them. Conservatives did it in the Vietnam era under the guise of patriotism, and today, liberals are doing it in the name of misinformation and public safety. The excuses change, but the goal remains the same—shut up, sit down, and don’t ask too many questions.

Back in the ’60s and ’70s, it was the Republicans and the so-called moral majority clutching their pearls at those long-haired, anti-war hippies daring to question the government. Dissent was labeled un-American, unpatriotic, and borderline treasonous. The government spied on protesters, shut down speech it deemed subversive, and worked overtime to control the narrative. Vietnam? A noble cause! Watergate? Just a misunderstanding! Nixon? A man of the people! Meanwhile, the left—those righteous champions of free speech—screamed about government overreach, civil liberties, and the right to question authority.

Fast forward to today, and the roles have completely reversed. Now it’s the progressives gleefully hitting the censorship button—this time to protect us from the great evils of “misinformation.” Social media companies, conveniently aligned with the left, deplatform anyone who questions prevailing narratives on elections, pandemics, or gender ideology. Dissenting views, no matter how well-reasoned, get flagged, suppressed, or outright deleted. Suddenly, the same people who once howled about government overreach are cheering when Silicon Valley and intelligence agencies work together to curate the “correct” opinions for public consumption.

The hilarious part? Neither side ever learns. When conservatives were in charge of censorship, they never imagined a future where the shoe would be on the other foot. And today’s liberals, convinced that their moral superiority will last forever, don’t seem to realize that censorship always spirals out of control. The same government and corporate machinery they use to silence their enemies today will inevitably turn on them tomorrow—because power doesn’t care about your ideology, only its own survival.

At the end of the day, censorship is not a left or right issue—it’s a power issue. The First Amendment was designed to stop precisely this kind of nonsense, but those in power will always find new, creative ways to justify its violation. The only way to break this cycle is simple: defend free speech even when it’s inconvenient, even when it offends you, and especially when it challenges your own side. Otherwise, don’t be surprised when the censorship beast you fed comes knocking at your door next.
