If your town is like mine there are a few conservatives in a sea of progressives. But I may add, the town is surrounded by a very conservative county. So we got that going for us. What we don’t have going for us is the Mayor and City Council who seemingly are more interested in clutching pearls and attending “Hands Off” and “Anti Trump/Musk” demonstrations.
Here’s a case in point. A recent Mayor/Council statement proclaimed, “….it is not our (police) policy to ask immigration status.” We are a “welcoming” community for migrants. It goes on to talk about immigrant contributions to the community and why they have no need be fearful. Fearful of what? If people are here legally, subject to existing laws, why issue this statement at all? Are they telling me in a round-about way that they are aware illegal aliens reside in our city? Sure seems so.
As we know, there were over 11 million illegal crossings between 2020 and 2024. Where have they ended up? Why do cities invoke “sanctuary” policies to provide succor to illegals at the expense of their citizens? Policies that lead to increased demands on schools, hospitals, first responders, police, social networks, state and federal subsidy programs. Not to be overly dramatic but remember that compassion sometimes breeds chaos and issues embraced by politicos often hurt the people they’re supposed to help. Sanctuary was never so confusing.
So compassion and perhaps guilt may be the touchstones of illegal acceptance. If so, do compassion and guilt allow migrants to come to our country without being vetted? Entering at places other than defined ports of entry? Demanding rather than asking? Do they wind up in places where they want to be “separate but equal”? That didn’t work out so well in Plessy v Ferguson.
In the 1960s, I attended high school and college not far from the Rio Grande Valley. I had friends from all over that region from both sides of the border. With a predominately Hispanic population it is truly a mixed community like many of our border states. Decades ago many Mexican residents legally crossed the border for daily work in the US and were welcomed.
Fast forward to the early 1990s. I worked with several military Base Closure communities helping them plan their economic redevelopment. Castle AFB in California’s agriculturally rich Central Valley was one. Both the city’s Chambers of Commerce wanted to maintain a welcoming presence for seasonal, migrant farm workers. But they also remembered the 1960s, when “undocumented workers” (“wetbacks” as they were called) began to take work from those already there or were simply used as strikebreakers. These illegals only hurt those who simply wanted to be left alone to fulfill their obligations and then return to their homes in Mexico. As a result Caesar Chavez founded the United Farm Workers union to initially protect the seasonal workers.
I am a fan of legal immigration. I am a product of legal immigration. However, I’m not a fan of those simply willing to exploit our country. What is gained by opening our borders to everyone who demands entrance? Anyone who simply wants to take advantage of our good will? Or worse, criminals who prey upon our people. How do we distinguish among those who will contribute from those who don’t—or won’t? It’s simple I would think. Compel legal immigration versus patronizing illegal immigration.
There is currently a hue and cry from Democrats about “habeas corpus” and “due process” for illegal aliens. But the Party that caused the problem has no solution for the problem. And most SCOTUS decisions concerning these two terms were made prior to the 11 million influx. In the military there were rules that allowed for limited challenge due to precise definitions. But in this case, that’s a lot to ask of Congress as they can’t even define insurrection. And the Article III folks? You need to sit back, take a deep breath, stay in your lane and out of decisions you’re not qualified to make. Until then the progressive merry-go-round continues to turn, we pay for the ride and the illegals are the ones on the horses. Giddy up.
