Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro oversaw military exercises on Thursday in which he cheered as troops marched and fired guns. “After 20 continuous days of announcements, threats, psychological war, after 20 days of siege against the Venezuelan nation, today we are stronger than yesterday,” Maduro said.
The demonstration comes as tensions with the US are rising, after President Trump deployed three warships with 4,000 soldiers to the region’s waters. The amphibious assault ships are reportedly set to enter waters off Latin America by next week. Trump — who this month issued a $50 million bounty for Maduro’s capture — recently authorized the use of military capabilities for countering former drug cartels, and this is one of the first major shows of force in Latin America since that decision was announced this month.
