30 Seconds Over DC

Once each year The State of the Union Address finds most of our military and elected leaders, including the president, all gathered together.

Suppose an enemy nation/cartel loaded a mega-bomb on a FedEx cargo plane bound from a friendly EU country to Baltimore … and commandeers the pilot, whose family has been kidnapped and held captive. As this scheduled flight lines up to descend to BWI the suicidal on-board operative would kill the pilot and co-pilot, radio a steerage malfunction, turn toward The House and 9-11 style….

Yeah, I know, Secret Service agents man the rooftops armed with surface-to-air missiles. But who, with only 30-seconds to decide, is going to shoot down what appears to be, for all intents and purposes, a bona fide, commercial airliner of a friendly nation – not to mention collateral damage from falling debris (Netflix are you listing?).

Solution: Establish remote clusters of legislators who could interact, debate and vote via electronic means. Creating a dozen or so “mini” Houses and Senates at strategic locations throughout the U.S. could protect us against annihilation of the government. An added benefit would be that these elected officials would then be more accessible to their constituents.
