The Democrats are the Wile E. Coyote’s of politics. They’ve stopped even trying to win elections, and instead keep going to their Acme catalog of dirty tricks, looking for hair-brained schemes to win elections without actually winning votes.
They’ve tried
- “Push Grandma off a cliff,”
- Gerrymandering,
- “Russian collusion,”
- Cemetery voter outreach,
- “Laptop disinformation,”
- Mail in balloting, and
- Election season rather than election day.
Now they’ve donned their roller skates and a rocket pack for another run at electoral dominance – without the bothersome step of winning the debate of ideas. They’re calling this attempt the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC). I’m calling it the Constitutionally Illiterate and Unbelievably Naïve Conspiracy (CIUNC).
Since Republicans seem to be proficient at getting their name on the Resolute Desk name plate without actually winning the popular vote, the Dems decided that their path to one-party rule is to simply eliminate the Electoral College, and buss illegal aliens to the polls – easy peasy. That could be done via amendment, but this is the Dems were talking about – “play by the rules” isn’t in their Acme catalog. Instead, they’ve come up with a workaround to our pesky Constitution.
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is legally binding legislation, passed in participating states, to render the Electoral College irrelevant. Each member of the compact agrees to award their electoral votes to the winner of the Presidential popular vote. The compact doesn’t eliminate the Electoral College; it just subverts how votes are awarded. The agreement becomes operational as soon as states with 270 or more votes join the compact – giving them total control of the Electoral College outcome.
So far, 19 states have joined the compact, with Virginia being the most recent inductee. Collectively they currently control 222 electoral votes. It is conceivable that the NPVIC could become operational in time for the 2028 election, depending on how the midterms go.
If that happens:
- Will we be in a genuine Constitutional crisis? Yup!
- Will the Supreme Court step in to “save our democracy”? I dunno.
- Did it save our healthcare? Nope.
- Did it stop the 2020 election steal? Nope.
A coin toss is more predictive of how Chief Justice Roberts will rule than anything as pedestrian as the Constitution or founding principles.
Hence, I recommend we all stock up on popcorn. This popular vote thingy might really happen – and then the comedy will begin. Okay, comedy for us, tragedy for them.
The thing that makes every Roadrunner cartoon hysterical is Wile E. Coyote’s complete ignorance of unintended consequences. Well, think of the NPVIC as the Dems laboring to launch an anvil with a catapult, while standing in the target zone.
In their zeal to find an electoral shortcut, they haven’t even considered why Bush (2000) and Trump (2016) lost the popular vote. It wasn’t because they couldn’t win it. It was because they didn’t campaign for the popular vote. They campaigned to win the game by the rules of the game – win enough states to win the Electoral College. When the Dems manage to change the rules, the contestants are going to change how they play the game, which will be the anvil going straight up, and coming straight back down – the unintended consequences.
The first unintended consequence will be that when Republicans win the popular vote, they will enter office with a clear mandate, and deliver a gut punch to the “selected not elected” lunatics. The Dems will no longer be able to sell the narrative that their “resistance” is anything other than undermining the will of the people.
The other unintended consequence will be that conservatives in blue states will suddenly have a reason to vote again. When Cali has only Dems on the ballot for national office, and there’s no conceivable way for a Republican to win the state, conservatives have little reason to head down to the polls every two years. But with NPVIC, candidate Vance doesn’t need to win California, he just needs to pile up some votes there. Then California conservatives (or those in any blue state) will have a reason to vote – to help Republicans run up their popular vote tally. That will surely benefit down-ticket Republicans in Democrat held states.
We know how this episode of Roadrunner will end, because Donald Trump always does the unexpected, and did something in 2024 that no Republican candidate for President has ever done. He didn’t campaign for the Presidency (i.e. the Electoral College), he campaigned to spank the Democrats (i.e. the popular vote). He did voter outreach in deep blue New York while he was on trial there, and in other blue states throughout the election season. As a result, he won both the Electoral College and the popular vote, proving that Republicans can and will continue to win – even after NPVIC goes live.
The Dems childishly call NPVIC “saving democracy” – apparently from he Constitution. However, I call it “disenfranchising their own voters.” Consider how the 2024 would have been decided, had the compact already been operational. Kamala Harris won California’s 54 electoral votes by a whopping 20 percent of the vote margin. However, the Donald still won the nationwide popular vote by 1.5 percent. Under the rules of the compact, Trump’s electoral college win would have gone from 312 to 226, to 512 to 17. Those 58.5 percent of Dems in Cali who thought Kackles had leadership potential, would have seen every one of their Electoral College votes go to the hated Donald Trump.
When that starts happening consistently, a whole bunch of abortion celebrating, biology denying, climate hoaxers are suddenly going to have a reason to stay at home watching Big Bang Theory reruns, on election night every two years. That will be the Dems flattened on the desert floor, by the unintended consequence of their own 500-pound anvil landing squarely in their empty heads.
Now for an investment tip: I’m currently investing in silicone, in preparation for the 2028 election. When JD Vance wins the Electoral College in a landslide not seen since The Gipper won every state but Minnesota, the dildo protests are going to be EPIC!
