My Aunt Mae Wykle was a major pioneer in black nursing in the 1950’s. May Louise Hinton-Wykle was born February 11, 1934, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, to John R. and Florence A. Randall. Wykle graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in rural Ohio. Originally, she wished to attend medical school but decided to switch career paths after working as a nurse’s aide for one year at Martins Ferry Hospital after graduating in 1956 at the Ruth Brant School of Nursing in Martins Ferry, Ohio. Her grandmother also served as her inspiration when she decided to pursue a career in health care.
She was always very intelligent and other Blacks counted on her to pass her classes successfully to achieve her goal. She graduated with honors and ended up working for the jimmy Carter administration at a later point and even stayed with him and Rosyln Carter at their home in Plains Georgia. Here specialty later in life was on aging adults.
My Aunt Mae had a DNA test sampled and discovered that my maternal family shares DNA with Queen Charlotte of England who was a Mulatto Queen and a City in North Carolina was named for her. Our family is related to all the royal families since she was on the throne through today including King James, Prince Andrew, Charles down the line. Today, at the age of 92, she is still teaching at Case Western Reserve University near Cleveland Ohio.
