ENOUGH!!! After more than two weeks of non-leadership while watching the unmitigated Russian invasion of a sovereign country, it’s pretty apparent that our “leaders”, both civilian and military, have completely abdicated their primary responsibility (to LEAD). Instead, we’re witness to all this hand-wringing surrounding concerns of potential actions being perceived as “escalatory” and basically doing next to nothing to stop the continued slaughter of innocent women and children in a country we supposedly support.
While the administration, the State Department, and the Pentagon continue to worry about escalating a WAR (tell me again what’s worse than a war that’s already in progress??), Russian aggression continues unchecked by forces external to Ukraine because we have repeatedly failed to deliver the necessary weaponry that the Ukrainian leader has repeatedly asked, nay, BEGGED for. It is beyond time that we remembered we’re not dealing with a respectable politician on the other side of the table, who’s word and deed can be trusted to be honorable. Instead, we need to remind our leadership we’re dealing with a straight-out thug. The ONLY thing thugs understand is brute force. Putin couldn’t give a rat’s rear-end less about sanctions. He only knows that, right now, he has the West exactly where he wants them, standing on the sidelines wringing their hands, wanting to help, but not wanting to get into an “escalation”. He’ll continue his unchecked aggression against the citizens of Ukraine UNLESS AND UNTIL finally, we decide to act.
Unfortunately for President Winston Churchill Zelensky, it appears we have absolutely ZERO intestinal fortitude (guts) to actually stand with his valiant citizenry if this stand requires any more than verbal platitudes. Our vaunted “sanctions”, designed to deliver a “crippling blow” to the Russian economy, exempted the VERY thing that allows the Russian economy (and the financial engine behind Putin’s aggression) to continue (the export of energy). Instead of “being designed for maximum impact”, the sanctions were designed for the APPEARANCE of maximum impact. Only yesterday, fully two weeks into this unwarranted invasion, did our “president” decide, under great political pressure, to ban imports of Russian oil. Can someone please explain to why it took popular pressure to force our “president” to do the right thing (and then more than 14 days after he should have acted?). Note that he did NOT, by the way, ban the export of Russian uranium to Iran…. Go figure.
Today the Pentagon issued a statement that the transfer of Poland’s MI-29 MIG fighters was “untenable”. This is yet another wussisifed statement revealing the fact that our entire “leadership” lacks a spine. It sickens me to know that, despite the moral imperative the United States has to act to alleviate suffering of a people whose only crime was the desire to be a free, independent state, our nation has left the Ukranians completely alone to face this unwarranted onslaught. The word “honor” rings hollow among our administration and Departments of State and Defense leadership.
As of 2022, NATO had approximately 3.37 million active military personnel compared with 1.35 million active military personnel in the Russian military (https://www.statista.com/statistics/1293174/nato-russia-military-comparison). Instead of worrying about “escalatory actions”, I have another recommendation….bring the entire might of the NATO alliance (coupled with a couple hundred thousand military and 15-odd million Ukrainian males) to bear against this invasion, kick the Russians out of Ukraine, restore the pre-2014 boundaries of the country and show Putin that we aren’t cowed by his “nuclear sabre rattling”. I said earlier in this opinion that the ONLY thing that man understands is brute force. It’s far past the time he receives a taste of the offering he’s been providing to the Ukrainians. Of course, this is only a pipe dream and won’t happen because of the aforementioned wusses that are in leadership positions throughout our administration.
Any student of strategy has a basic understanding of the levers of national power: Diplomacy, Intelligence, Military, and Economic, or DIME (the military does love their acronyms). Unfortunately, the current administration has all but forgotten that there is indeed a MILITARY level of national (and alliance) power, and as a result, has condemned Ukraine to DI(m)E.

I feel the same as you do. I want the might of Nato allies along with us to bear down on this bully. He has killed so many innocent, (the count isn’t accurate at the moment) bombed so many non-military sites, we need to do something more to help the Ukrainian men and women fighting against the invasion of Russia (Putin). He knows as well as the world knows, if he fires a nuke that would spell the end.
Even if it wasn’t our war to fight, earlier, I think it has become that, now. If there are people who are fearful of the use of nuclear weapons, they need to understand that Putin understands that double-edged sword, which will keep him from pulling that weapon out. Even if he does, being fearful of its use is something that I would hate to see appeasement and capitulation over. Putin is going to do whatever Putin decides, because the enemy always gets a vote. We can’t control how he votes, but we can stop this war, and further aggression by stepping up and defending Ukraine, a sovereign country. Too bad we have an administration that is more leaning towards capitulation and appeasement, or fighting the ill-advised political war, for only political benefit.
Thanks Michael. Not that I’m overly concerned about America’s honor or standing in the world (Biden’s pretty much trashed that along with our economy and just about everything else he’s touched), but we have a MORAL obligation to stop this slaughter of innocents.
