Remember

Remember

“Go tell to Sparta, thou who passest by, that here, obedient to her laws, we lie.”

Simonides

That is one of the most famous passages in literature. Those words by the poet Simonides talk about the death of the 300 Spartans, led by King Leonidas at Thermopylae.

What do these words mean? In the time of Leonidas, the afterlife wasn’t something that people believed in. All that was left after your death was what others spoke of about you. The way you lived your life, and the way you ended your life was what others would know about you after your death. And that was all that there could be.

The death of the Spartan 300 is has echoed through the ages, along side other doomed stands like the Alamo and the Battle of Camarein. But what do all of these have in common? The dead are making a stand for their own beliefs and their own honor. They are dying for what they lived for. There can be no more noble cause.

But something has broken in today’s society. We still have many people ready and willing to stand up and be counted when the time comes to stand between good and evil. But we also have a broken segment of society, that only wants to be famous no matter how they do it.

We have a segment of society that only remembers that these heroes died in violence. They don’t remember that they died doing good. This horrible segment of society, usually raised without a father, see the mass murderers as on par with the heroes. They remember the murders at Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and now Uvalde as a place where a murderer became famous. And all they care about is becoming famous, they don’t care about the true evil done to become infamous.

And while its true that in almost every case, these murderers were raised without any sort of decent male role model in the home, there are enough that did have two parents that I have to admit some people are simply evil. No matter how hard the parents try, bad kids happened and become bad people.

But what do we do about it? I don’t know how we can prevent all of these shootings. But I know where to start. These evil people do this to become famous. Do not make them famous. Most often these scum kill themselves or are killed by the police during the commission of the crime. So instead of putting pictures on television of the murderer and speculating about his life, don’t mention his name at all. Remember those he murdered, remember them with love. But don’t ever refer to the murderer by name, don’t show a picture, don’t talk about his motives. Do not interview his friends and relatives. Though not complicit in the crime, they really don’t matter. He was an evil human being. And that is all we need to know. These people murder for a misbegotten belief that committing an evil act will make them immortal. So don’t make them immortal, make them unknown. Cremate them with no ceremony and spread the ashes in sewer pond. Don’t remember them.

The lives of the murders don’t matter. Once he has decided to murder young children, he has become someone who truly does not matter. He has given up his right to be heard, and even his right to a name. Should one of these mass murderers be caught alive, then his trial should not be on TV, he should not be pictured on TV, and there should be no interviews of the jurors. Nothing. These people want fame. So make sure they get the opposite. It wont prevent all the mass shootings, but it should reduce the number. Don’t make them famous. Make them unknown. And remember the victims.
