I was asked to write about conservatism by the county GOP. They gave me nine tenets and I was to provide a paragraph on each. They are obviously not all my ideas but certainly an amalgam of my readings and thoughts. I hope you can relate to them.
1. We believe the Country evolved from the Founding Documents (the Declaration, Constitution and the Bill of Rights) which created a Nation diverse in its people but singular in its purpose. These documents are colorblind to religion and George Washington said it best in a letter to an early Hebrew congregation, the American government “gives bigotry no sanction.” And even today, we enjoy a freedom to worship as no where else in the world—just as the Founders intended. “What have you given us sir?” “A Republic madam, if you can keep it.” Benj. Franklin
2. We believe that although the Nation was created with faults, but as we progress through history those faults are corrected. Slavery was abolished, women’s suffrage became a reality, and the 1964 Civil Rights Act was the most important law since Reconstruction. These and others, form the guardrails of the individual rights, freedom, and opportunity which we enjoy today. “Democracy is never a final achievement. It is a call to an untiring effort.” JFK
3. We believe in the dignity of every human being whether growing in a mother’s womb or nearing the end of life. We believe the question of abortion should be dictated by the people of the State in which they reside with exemptions made for medical necessity. Said another way, a fetus is a “person with potential” and in the end all the dialogue, debate, and rhetoric comes down to one thing, we must always care of the woman and the child. “Human life is created in God’s image, and that makes it sacred.” Colin S. Smith.
4. We believe that a country’s borders are inviolate. Without a secure border the safety of the people is put in jeopardy. Overseas alliances need to be built and sustained on shared values and common goals. Only by doing these things can we keep the homeland as free from threats as possible. Lastly, entry into foreign entanglements must be made carefully, fully aware of the national consequences and not simply to satisfy national hubris. Our leaders must be men and women of conscience, wisdom and strength. “Let’s put the safety and security of the American people first.” Mike Pence
5. We believe that American capitalism stimulates and encourages the free market. We believe the government should be the protector of the individual and market, not the master of either. By doing so, the United States continues to be the most prosperous and freest nation in the world. Capitalism has brought greater economic wealth and cultural freedom to our people, more so than elsewhere. “A strong American economy is essential to the well-being and security of our friends and allies.” Ronald Reagan
6. We believe free and fair elections are the lifeblood of America. Voting by mail must be made secure and perhaps replaced with a 100% American created independent voting system. Censorship, whether by Big Tech or the mainstream media, must be expunged. Pro: voter ID; maintaining accuracy of voter registration lists; banning ballot trafficking; limiting mail-in voting; and, rigorously enforcing election laws. “We conservatives can win the ideological battles on a level playing field. Our ideas are better.” John McCain
7. We believe fiscal conservatism must return to the Republican Party. Through discarding federal agencies that have outlived their proven usefulness, We can do that. We support a Convention of States by which we encourage amendments to curtail spending, keep taxation low, enact term limits, and balance the national budget. We believe that government’s role is to secure the right of the American people to live decent, worthwhile lives according to their own goals and faculties. “I own I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive.” Thomas Jefferson
8. We believe in equal rights and opportunity, self reliance, work ethic, achievement on merit, patriotism, and religion. These are the values our Founders shared and which met the challenge of a new country’s development. Today, these form the basis of our actions “when no one is watching.” They form the benchmark for morality and ethics, our actions and our choices. These, we feel, symbolize who America is. “America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.” Harry Truman
9. We believe in students, their ability, and their creativity. Also, we believe that State provided funding should follow the student in order to receive the best education possible. We believe parents should have the final say in their child’s education. Age appropriate content and holding teachers accountable is part of. our belief system. We believe prayer and respect for country should be returned to the classroom in order to provide positive reinforcement of traditional values.“Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.”Albert Einstein
These are the beliefs that unite us here in the hills of North Carolina. If they are yours, make them known!
