For Ted, Autumn’s Mercy
September comes softly,
more gentle than the steamy and sultry
days of August,
a harbinger of Autumn’s mercy,
when the windows fling open, once again,
to welcome the invigorating, brisk wind
laden with hints of earth and red delicious,
as if in competition with the barmbrack
fresh from the oven.
The barn cats,
having slept away their summer
basking in the rays of a golden sun,
soon will spend their days
pouncing on field mice
scurrying amongst the dahlias,
and chasing fluttering, amber jewels
that crinkle under the weight
of a spirited and frisky paw.
I, too, welcome my own Autumn,
embracing the refreshing ardor
blown in along with Cupid’s arrow,
which has pierced my timeworn heart
and left it beating with renewed vigor,
a devotion so strong, it eases the mind
and softens the sorrows of the past,
no longer wilting under stifling oppression,
a casualty of scorched earth.
Before flying south, the birds unite once more,
their melody a praise of fortitude.
Hand in hand with my one true love,
I turn my face to the sun
with the constancy of summer’s sunflower,
blissful and content with my heart’s desire,
mo anam cara,
my journey begins anew with you
and promises of better days.
