The Company Trump Keeps

A friend of mine from High School (which goes way, waaaay back!) sent me a copy of Michael Cohen’s book, “Disloyal.” It’s the story of the guy who went to jail and claimed to be the close “consigliore” for Donald Trump. My friend couldn’t believe that I supported President Donald Trump when this book came out in August 2020 before the election. The book is the story of how a “fixer” got fixed.

Michael Cohen paid $130k in hush money that was counted as a campaign contribution. It was a campaign finance law violation. Then, Cohen lied to Congress about it. He made a false statement to a bank, which he blamed on a subordinate. And, the final bonus infraction was his unreported income.

My first impression was how well the FBI can dig through a lot of very complex finances in twisted paper trail. Since they did so well with Cohen, one wonders how well they could sort through Hunter Biden’s overseas deals – if they wanted to do so.

A really interesting angle of his tell “much-if-not-all” is how he describes the cult of Trump. It’s not a pretty picture. It ascribes a feral, cunning to Trump, not intelligence. It makes telltale accusations of racism, white nationalism, nativism, and reactionary politics.

Yet, even as Cohen claims to be Trump’s personal lawyer. He wrote that he rarely went to the 5th Floor Campaign headquarters in 2016. So, how many others were acting as Trump’s personal lawyer? In 2018, he was merely a spectator the campaign. Was Cohen really a confidante and pal to Sean Hannity? I wonder.

Cohen got a $500k advance for his 2018 puff book, “Trump Revolution: From the Tower to the White House. Understanding Donald J. Trump.” I wonder how much he got for this 2020 hit piece?

And quite unbelievably, after all, Cohen says he still has “a lot of affection for him” – Trump.

After reading the book, I felt the urge to wash my hands repeatedly. Considered using tongs to touch the book again. Yes, it’s a slimy mess. Slimy because Cohen’s self-admission is a livelihood and manhood devoid of good character. There’s nothing uplifting and honorable in him. He’s willing to do any disgusting thing he is asked to do.

Because he catalogs all the low things demanded of him so easily, I wonder if all of them were actually asked. Regardless, his picture would go well next to the dictionary definition of “slimeball.”

How did such a slimeball stay employed by Trump? How often did Trump see him at work and socially and for how long? Makes me wonder about the hard facts, not the accusations.

An old saw in the Army was to check out the aide de camp for any general. It was an insight into the character of the general. The aide had a reputation with his or her peers. The aide’s reputation reflected on the general, and as the saying goes, “The higher you go up the flag pole, the more your butt shows.” (Substitute another word for butt as you see fit.)

If Trump had serious quality time with Cohen, even if he didn’t do a single thing that Cohen hints, suggests, and accuses, then Trump has a real problem judging character in his subordinates. Or, Trump tolerates a disturbingly high degree of shady slime in his inner circle.

Neither leadership failure bodes well. If Trump is seen through the company he keeps, he chooses very poorly.

Voters should consider the company Trump keeps.

Even as Trump rolls up in the polls, he needs to be held accountable in the Republican primaries. It’s not an illusion or a delusion. It’s a statement of what should be for our Nation.

The rabid attacks from the Human Secular Totalitarians – called Democrats – push normal Americans to greater loyalty to Trump. It’s an undeserved honor for a super-narcissist who keeps disgusting company.

  1. I don’t know about you, but I’m not voting for a pastor in my President. If you had to judge all candidates by slimy lawyers around them, all would be disqualified. Look at what Trump did, not what his lawyer did, while in office. You’re letting a proven liar frame your state of mind. I wouldn’t use tongs with that book, I would just toss it in the garbage.

    • So ignore Cohen.

Look at his hires. Fauci, Wray, Kelly, Milley, Sessions, Barr, Birx, Omarosa, Mooch, Tillerson, Bolton, and on and on and on.

Trump’s judge of character is atrocious. We can’t afford to waste another 4 years with swamp creatures and idiots hired by Trump.

      • Concur. And, Trump will lose in the swing states that determine the election. Hope a DeSantis surprise in the primaries and Trump’s implosion to follow settle the deal for DeSantis to win. I know “hope is not a method or strategy.”

      • He inherited Fauci, Birx and Milley. Even with idiot swamp creatures, he managed to be our best president since Ronald Reagan, without ever holding public office before. No one else can match his record of accomplishment. With the persecution he’s undergone and the backstabbing from fellow “conservatives”, no one is in a better to improve his record than Trump himself. Time for the squishes to move aside.

        • Squishes? DeSantis is much more conservative than Trump and has proven it.

Trump thinks Hezbolla is smart and wants to pick the day after an attack to carry on a personal beef with Netanyahu over credit. DeSantis leads instead. Trump loves Groomer Disney and Bud Light and transgenders in the bathroom with your wife and girls. Trump supports abortion again, attacking prolife voters and calling Heatbeat bills “terrible” and “mean”.

Trump was the best President since Reagan. There has been 3 Republicans, so that isn’t a very high bar to clear.

Why the excuses? Trump promised to drain the swamp. We should hold him to account. His last 10 months was by far the worst of his Presidency. In 3 years, he didn’t learn anything, but got worse. Why will 4 more years be better? The deep state only got stronger under Trump. They punked him and he did nothing but empower them further.

No, he didn’t inherit them. He put Fauci and Birx in charge of the task force, a task force he created. That’s all on him. He elevated Milley. He hired Wray, who was in the private sector.

Why should we nominate a guy who just blames everyone else for his failures? Why would the next 4 years be different?

          • EagleHasLanded: The points made aren’t DNC talking points. They foam at the mouth about insurrection, racism, etc.

    • Agreed that Cohen is a proven and self-admitted liar. How many liars to you keep close to you?

Yes, I’d vote for Old Scratch himself if he got the R nomination for POTUS in 2024. Thanks for reading and commenting.
