US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned following an attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Her resignation came a day after testifying to a congressional committee about law enforcement failures during Trump’s campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. This incident, which resulted in one death and two critical injuries, led to widespread calls for her resignation.

A joint letter from Democratic and Republican leaders on the House Oversight Committee demanded her resignation after her testimony, where she struggled to provide detailed answers about the Secret Service’s actions. Cheatle admitted the shooting was a significant operational failure and took full responsibility for any security lapses, pledging to prevent such incidents in the future.

The congressional leaders expressed frustration with her inability to provide clear answers, with one Republican lawmaker accusing her of dishonesty. They criticized her for failing to reassure the public that the Secret Service had learned from its mistakes.

Cheatle’s resignation was followed by calls for a full review of the security failures to prevent future incidents. The attack occurred when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired an AR-15-style rifle from a rooftop outside the rally, striking Trump’s ear and killing a rallygoer. Crooks was then fatally shot by a Secret Service sniper.

In response to the incident, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are forming a bipartisan task force to investigate further. Cheatle, who had been with the Secret Service for 27 years and later worked as a security official for PepsiCo, was appointed to lead the agency in 2022.

In a press conference, Johnson stated that Cheatle’s resignation was overdue and emphasized the need to rebuild public trust in the Secret Service. Trump, in his first interview since the attack, claimed he received no warning from Secret Service agents and criticized the Biden administration for inadequate protection.

President Joe Biden thanked Cheatle for her service and integrity, acknowledging the independent review to understand the incident better and ensure it never happens again.
