At 6:18 pm Israeli time (8:18 AM PST/ 11:18 AM EST) on Saturday, July 27, a rocket launched by Hezbollah slammed into a soccer field in the Golan Heights town of Majd al-Shams. The latest updates from Israel report that 10 have been killed (mostly children), 34 are injured of which 17 are in critical condition.
The Golan Heights town of Majd al-Shams is a Druze community. Some Druze are Syrian nationals and a very small number are Israeli. When Israel annexed the Golan Heights they offered all the Druze who lived there Israeli citizenship but over 90% refused and elected to keep their Syrian citizenship and keep living in the Golan. Those Druze have Israeli permanent residence status. Some of the Druze who have Israeli citizenship, serve in the IDF voluntarily. The Druze are not conscripted like the rest of the Jewish population and have to volunteer to serve.
The IDF held a press conference about 2 and half hours after the terror attack and stated that some of the victims were in fact, Israeli citizens.
Hezbollah initially took full responsibility for the attack but as the death toll started climbing Hezbollah backtracked and tried to pretend the rocket was not from them. Israel put out an announcement that they have proof the rocket came from Hezbollah. Hezbollah is definitively scared of what the IDF is going to do.
Today is the Jewish Sabbath. Netanyahu is currently in Washington D.C. His flight back to Israel was scheduled to leave when the Sabbath ends at sunset tonight. Travel on the Sabbath (except for walking) is forbidden except in life-and-death situations. Any response to this incident will need Netanyahu’s go-ahead. While Netanyahu can communicate with Israel from DC it is probably not 100% secure so they will wait until they are on the plane at minimum or when he gets back on the ground in Israel.
Given the tragedy, Netanyahu might leave DC immediately. The flight time to Israel is about 12 hours and Israel is 7 hours ahead of DC time. If Netanyahu left immediately then he would arrive in Israel about 8 AM EST/5 AM PST Sunday morning. If Netanyahu leaves at the scheduled time after sunset tonight, he will arrive 4 PM EST/1 PM PST Sunday. A response will probably not happen until Sunday evening at the earliest.
If Israel decides to invade they will probably wait like they did with Hamas to make sure they do not repeat what happened in 2006. Back in 2006, Hezbollah killed three IDF soldiers and took two as hostages. The IDF invaded within minutes with tanks but Hezbollah expected that, and several tanks drove over land minds destroying the tanks and killing everyone on board. Ehud Olmert was the prime minister of Israel back then, and this decision to invade Lebanon without making sure the operational plans were effective was viewed as a huge disaster by the Israeli public. It was the primary reason Netanyahu won the next election. Netanyahu is deliberate in his planning to avoid such scenarios.
Fun Fact: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu served in Sayeret Matkal which is Israel’s version of Delta Force. All of its missions are classified. Netanyahu also has a Master’s Degree from MIT in Boston that he completed in two and half years despite taking a break to serve in the Yom Kippur War. Netanyahu is just as badass as Trump.
Reports are coming out of Israel that the IDF will 100% escalate in its response but they will try to push their response as far as they can without starting an all-out war. However, there are those in Netanyahu’s security cabinet who will be pushing for a full-scale invasion of Lebanon to drive Hezbollah north of the Litani River.
The ideal scenario for Israel would be to finish up its war with Hamas before invading Lebanon. But most of the major fighting in Gaza is actually complete and the IDF is currently mostly engaged in mopping up operations. Another important factor for the IDF in deciding to invade Lebanon now or wait is the fact that Biden is still withholding 2,000 lb. bombs the IDF needs for its air force. However, if a full-fledged war breaks out after the IDF responds to this terror attack, they are fully prepared as operational plans were drawn up back in early June for an invasion of Lebanon. Those plans just need to be fine-tuned before the green light is given
