What could happen if Kamala Harris wins in November?
While I still believe (and certainly hope) Donald Trump wins election to the Presidency in 2024, those of us who oppose the very liberal policy prescriptions and philosophy of Kamala Harris need to accept one very disturbing possibility: she CAN win. I won’t spend time in this column discussing the dynamics of the campaign, which is just getting a restart after the removal of Joe Biden from the race. Trump does maintain a slight lead in national polls and in most swing state polls, but that lead is somewhat precarious. There are several scenarios that could play out here. Americans should prepare themselves for the possibility of a Harris Presidency.
Harris wins, Democrats keep the Senate, but Republicans keep the House
A unified Republican House of Representatives led by Speaker Mike Johnson will thwart most of Harris’ liberal policy prescriptions. No direct tax increases or spending bills can pass the House. The individual tax rates (as well as child tax credits and standard deduction) that were reduced in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 are scheduled to “sunset” at the end of 2025, meaning that all tax brackets would increase, and the other deductions will be halved as rates revert to the pre-existing rates of 2017.
The limitations on deductibility for State and Local Taxes (SALT) will be eliminated, which might help some high-income earners in high tax states, much of this will be offset by the return of the onerous Alternative Minimum Tax limitations present in the previous tax code. Basically, everyone will receive a tax increase. Democrats will not be able to increase corporate tax rates, which do not sunset. As for the federal judiciary, as these are confirmed by the Senate, Harris will replace all departing judges/justices with very liberal activist judges and Republicans will not be able to stop them, other than to pick off the occasional extremist that makes in into Senate confirmation hearings. Foreign policy will be very weak as Harris will continue to appease Iran while distancing from Israel. Keep in mind, Harris is on record as saying she supports out ally, the “Republic of North Korea.” She has zero gravitas on the international stage.
House Republicans will push for limits on aid to Ukraine as Harris makes no attempt to force both parties to the negotiating table to end that senseless war. An attempt will be made to reach a compromise on not raising all marginal tax rates as was the case when Obama was President-the rates on top earners will increase in any case.
The politicization of the FBI and CIA will continue. The recent executive order that served to limit illegal crossings into the US, in time for the election, will be rescinded, permitting an unlimited flow of illegal aliens into the United States. Bloodletting in Ukraine will continue as Harris will appear weak to Putin, which will refuse any efforts from her to bully him into cessation of hostilities.
Harris wins, Republicans take control of the Senate
Same as above, except Democrats will not be able to rubber stamp leftist judicial appointments, forcing Harris to work out a compromise as was happening under Obama where each party got about 50% of its judges confirmed by the Senate. Otherwise, the same predictions described in scenario 1 will also apply. Even if Republicans lose the House… if they control the Senate, everything applies as stated earlier.
Harris wins and Democrats retake both the House and Senate
This is the proverbial “doomsday” scenario that could begin the de facto if not de jure demise of the “United” States. With no more “reasonable” Democrats left in the Senate (think Manchin), the first order of business will be to abolish the Senate filibuster. Many key Democrat senators are already on record supporting this. They will then begin to “pack” the Supreme Court with four additional justices to reverse recent decisions they find disagreeable.
Democrats will repeal the 1996 law that makes it illegal for aliens to vote in federal elections, granting full voting rights to all aliens. making them eligible to vote in the 2026 election. (Why else have they allowed so many unvetted aliens from third world countries cross into the US and be “paroled” via bogus asylum claims?) They will make DC and Puerto Rico states, enshrining a Senate majority that will become very difficult to overcome in an otherwise divided nation. Democrats will pass a new version of the infamous Green New Deal and Medicare for All, which will add trillions to the national debt and will increase not only government control over a larger segment of the economy, but also increase spending on debt service via higher interest payments.
Democrats will the use the courts to obliterate the Heller and McDonald decisions, making private ownership of firearms all but illegal at the federal level. They will weaponize the Department of Justice to new levels to prosecute anyone who speaks out against them on social media by passing new laws on “disinformation” akin to the infamous Alien and Sedition Acts passed in the late 18th (I expect a proverbial “knock on my door” if this happens.)
A 7-6 left wing Supreme court will permit such an egregious violation of the First Amendment. As a final insult to Conservatives, Democrats will pass a law to legalize abortion with no gestation limits, removing this decision from the constituent states. Current laws that restrict protests near abortion clinics will be strengthened and enforced with more vigor as prison sentences will be increased. Laws that punish those who destroy public property (Statues) will be repealed. Democrats will also pass some form of “Medicare for All.”
Of course, there are many other bad laws Democrats may pass under Scenario 3, but those are speculative and too numerous to delineate here. All the things I listed above are things Democrats have attempted to pass in recent years.
Conclusion
While I remain cautiously optimistic that Donald Trump will be able to prevail in this election, especially if he sticks to discussing facts and avoids responding in kind to what will be an endless barrage of ad hominem attacks by Kamala Harris, we should not underestimate the desire of the Democrat Pary to obtain and to maintain absolute power. These people play for keeps. If the Republicans can maintain control of at least one body of Congress, they can slow the rate of damage to our country and allow us to recover. If Scenario three plays out, we, the “normals,” may not be able to vote our way out of this. In this case, the state in which one resides may determine the amount of personal liberty you still possess, as many such states will use the principle of “nullification” to ignore the most onerous federal overreach. What they cannot do, however, is thwart the endless flood of illegal aliens that will be unleased on the American people. The end goal is to transform the United States into a post-modernist, post constitutional nation by any means necessary.
