The Dangerous Road to Division: How Identity Politics and Tribalism Threaten Our Society
In recent years, our society has witnessed a resurgence of identity politics and tribalism, trends that have a deeply troubling historical precedent. The process that leads to genocide—beginning with stereotyping, dehumanization, and eventually rationalizing extermination—follows a well-documented and horrifying path. This article aims to highlight the dangers of our current political and social climate, where new labels and divisive rhetoric threaten to sow seeds of deep discord and conflict.
The Path to Genocide: A Historical Overview
Genocides throughout history have followed a disturbingly consistent series of steps:
- **Classification**: Initially, society is divided into distinct groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, or nationality. This “us versus them” mentality lays the groundwork for deeper divisions.
- **Symbolization**: Groups are marked with symbols or labels, making them easily identifiable. This step reinforces divisions and creates a visual marker for discrimination.
- **Discrimination**: The dominant group uses laws and social customs to limit the rights of the marginalized group, further entrenching inequality.
- **Dehumanization**: The targeted group is stripped of their humanity, often compared to animals or diseases. This dehumanization makes it easier to justify acts of violence against them.
- **Organization**: Genocidal actions are typically organized and carried out by state or militant groups. Plans for mass killings are formulated and resources allocated.
- **Polarization**: Extremists work to drive wedges between groups, using propaganda and violence to silence moderates and amplify hatred.
- **Preparation**: Victims are identified, often through forced symbols, lists, or segregation into ghettos or camps.
- **Persecution**: The targeted group faces systemic oppression, including imprisonment, forced displacement, or starvation.
- **Extermination**: Mass killings begin, justified by the dehumanization that has taken place. This is the actual act of genocide.
- **Denial**: Perpetrators deny their crimes, destroy evidence, and silence witnesses. Denial serves to prevent accountability and perpetuate the cycle of hatred.
The Current Climate: A Warning
Today, we see worrying signs that mirror these initial stages. The political and social turmoil driven by identity politics and tribalism is not a path to unity but a dangerous descent into division. New labels, such as “white Christian nationalist,” serve as modern-day symbols that are intended to marginalize and stigmatize a specific group.
This term, and others like it, have been fabricated to create an “enemy within” narrative, justifying hatred and suspicion towards people exercising their constitutional rights. Such labeling is inherently derogatory and is a tactic of “divide and conquer” that keeps society fractured and distracted from larger issues.
The Consequences of Division
When society embraces identity politics and tribalism, we inevitably become more polarized. Rather than fostering understanding and cooperation, these trends encourage conflict and hostility. The constant infighting detracts from addressing real societal challenges and weakens the fabric of our nation.
We must recognize that labels like “white Christian nationalist” are not just harmless descriptors but tools of division. They echo the early stages of the genocidal process, where stereotyping and dehumanization laid the groundwork for atrocity. By allowing such rhetoric to gain traction, we risk repeating the darkest chapters of human history.

Couple this with the FBI investigating, and then (supposedly) stopping that, “conservative, traditional Catholics,” and the pattern has become obvious. Joe Biden, a Mass-every-Sunday Catholic who is nevertheless far more Democrat than Catholic, has tolerated this in his maladministration, and we can count on the fact that most of his appointees, while some might claim to be of one faith or other, are primarily secular.
