In the ancient Book of Enoch, 200 rebellious angels known as the “Watchers” descended to Earth, abandoning their divine duties. These Watchers took human wives and produced the Nephilim, giant hybrids who corrupted the world with forbidden knowledge, leading to chaos and violence. The actions of the Watchers are said to have contributed to the myths of ancient cultures, from the Greek Titans to the Sumerian Anunnaki, leaving a permanent mark on human history. The Book of Enoch is not included in the Bible, but its account of the Watchers is referenced in Genesis 6, where it briefly mentions the “sons of God” and the Nephilim.
What’s striking is the curious parallel between the 200 Watchers of ancient texts and the nearly 200 nations that make up the world today (193 UN Members). While this might be coincidental, it raises the question: could these divisions between nations mirror the divisions caused by the Watchers’ actions long ago? In both instances, we see fragmentation—first among divine beings corrupting the Earth, and now in the form of modern nations, each with its own struggles for power, morality, and identity.
The Nephilim, the offspring of the Watchers, became the basis for many myths of ancient giants and semi-divine beings. These myths, found across numerous cultures, tell of extraordinary beings who reshaped the early world—much like today’s powerful nations influence global dynamics.
As we look at the nearly 200 nations on Earth, the lesson from the Watchers may still apply: when power and knowledge are misused, chaos follows. Whether in ancient times or the present, decisions made by those in power have lasting consequences for humanity. The parallel between the 200 Watchers and today’s 200 nations serves as a reminder of the fine line between guidance and corruption.
