Great Expectations

Eons ago, most of 9th Grade English was all about the “Novel.” Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” was the vehicle for study. The Inauguration of the 47th President of these United States of America is about Great Expectations. And, much like the novel this Administration will have many twists and turns. Our Great Expectations today will bring mixed results. Life does more than imitate art or literature. Life exceeds novels in its extremes.

First, rhetoric always exceeds reality. Hyperbole is exaggeration going beyond imagination creating fantasy. Breathless adoration and glassy-eyed infatuation are for teenagers with puppy love or persons in a cult.

Consider the General George Patton quote,“For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.

The Great Expectations for the incredible, large, governing common sense coalition of Americans is conflated with one person – Trump. Many would argue that is appropriately so. To the victor go the spoils.

Let Trump have this Inauguration Day to celebrate to his fancy’s delight.

Then, let’s enjoy it all together cheering the wins and chastising the loses or compromises as Great Expectations meet the real reality TV show called – “life” or “the ways of the world.”

Results for the next four years will be mixed. Like Dicken’s Great Expectations there will be twists and turns aplenty.

But, whatever happens it is so, so, so much better than having the Democrats – who are Human Secularist Totalitarians – in power! (Human Secularist Totalitarian is too much of a mouthful to say and too complex for too many ears.)

So, call the Democrats “The Left” or Commies or – increasingly for me – Bolsheviks that they are – but be so grateful they aren’t the Federal Administration anymore.

Applaud Trump for becoming President Trump again against all odds.

And, if you are a Movement Conservative stay true to your principles. Stay supportive of people who share your principles and live them in public life. They are a distinct minority, but they weld the power of truth like a double-edged sword.

Expect enough “I told you so” events to occur to fill out a “promises made, promises cancelled” bingo card. Actually, it’ll be hard to decide if that should be a 5 x 5 or up to 10 x 10 card of campaign words to be countered by actions?

Keep focused on your local elections. Stay involved at home. Recruit candidates and help with the issues and campaigns to win School Boards, city and county governments, state-wide elections, and your Congressional seat.

Above all, keep up your daily Bible reading.

Keep your daily great expectations that “this is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
