What were you doing when you were thirteen?

When I was thirteen, 59 years ago, I was busy trying to figure out girls, and lamenting that I was ugly, unathletic, and a total loser when it came to the fairer sex. Who knew that things could be so different today?

Two 13-year-old boys allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle were shot by the owner during a confrontation Tuesday evening in Southwest Philadelphia, police said.

Shortly before 6:15 p.m., police said the boys were allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle in the alleyway between the 5900 blocks of Windsor Avenue and Belmar Terrace when the vehicle’s owner came out and confronted them.

The vehicle owner told police that he came out to confront the juvenile miscreants, when one of the boys pulled out a gun, and a gunfight ensued. The story tells us that the owner “reportedly” has a concealed carry permit, and was not wounded in the fight. Both boys were wounded, in their “lower bodies,” and taken to CHOP, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Would it be wrong of me to hope that those “lower body” injuries are the kind which would prevent them from ever reproducing?

Two other male juveniles were identified by the owner as being with the two who were shot.

You know how it goes: if one of the injured boys dies, his mother and her unemployed, live-in boyfriend will be wailing that her son was a good boy, and the car owner shouldn’t have shot him over a piece of property. They’ll be demanding answers!

When I was thirteen, I was trying to figure out girls. Apparently in the City of Brotherly Love, thirteen-year-olds today are trying to figure out how to get a Glock and steal a car.
