In a heartwarming move straight from the Department of Irony and For-Profit Empathy, The GEO Group announced the “immediate activation” of North Lake Correctional Facility—a cozy little 1,800-bed vacation lodge that’s been sitting empty since 2022. But don’t worry, it’s not haunted. Just… cold. Very, very cold.
The facility, which holds the honorable title of Michigan’s only for-profit prison, is located in Baldwin—aka, The Place You Forgot Exists Until Someone Needs to Store 1,800 Humans Somewhere Quiet. It will now serve as an ICE detention facility, or as we like to call it: “The Ellis Island of the Arctic Circle.”
Seriously, someone at GEO must’ve said, “What’s the most humane place to send people fleeing warm climates, warzones, or economic collapse?”
“Michigan!”
“In March!”
“In a prison!”
And boom—contract signed.
Cruel and Unusual? Or Just… Michigan?
Look, we’re not saying this is cruel and unusual punishment, but when your welcome packet includes mittens, snow chains, and a pamphlet titled “How to Tell a Snowdrift from a Guard Tower”, we’ve left normal behind.
Even the Canadian geese are like, “Nah, we’re flying around this place.”
The facility’s reopening has sparked concerns from human rights groups, meteorologists, and anyone who’s ever had their eyelashes freeze shut while pumping gas in Baldwin. But the GEO Group insists this is all totally normal, completely ethical, and a “fiscally responsible” use of space that happens to involve detaining humans for profit.
And hey, at least the state bird of Michigan is basically frostbite.
