Whose Trip?

Imagine we’re all on a commercial airliner when the cabin speaker intones: “This is your captain. Welcome aboard. The plane is completely automated and is being piloted and controlled by persons on the ground. Please relax and feel confident that nothing can go wrong, can go wrong, can go wrong….”
Are we, the passengers on Rocketship America, controlling ourselves or are we being controlled by AI, providence….

Then there’s the story of a man jumping from a ten-story building. He is heard to say as he passes each floor: “So far, so good.” Picture all 330 million of us falling from this building. The only question on our collective minds: “What floor are we passing now?”

While listening to the recording glitch or passing unnumbered floors, a fellow traveler hands you a cup containing water. Is the cup half full or half empty? As we travel through life we will receive many cups of substance. Nothing is perfect and everything has an end – including individual life and that of an empire. Acceptance, rejection or confrontation of these simple facts determine our being and that of a nation. The reply to the question is: Thank you.
