Tim Walz’ story: Weasel, Politician or? When Does Political Talk Cross The Line? Part 2

The Jury is In And I think We Have The Answer To The Question: Full Throated, 100% Crap Weasel

Back in August 2024 there was a little-ahem-imbroglio ongoing with the somewhat effervescent dancing Queen Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, who had been anointed-there was no vote-as Harris’ running mate for Vice President. There was a little matter of Stolen Valor accusations making the rounds and I wrote an article basically laying out the facts as known at the time about Walz and his service.

Recall, Walz had been somewhat “frocked” to the rank of Command Sergeants Major pursuant to completing his obligations that included the mandatory prerequisite of completion of the Command Sergeants Major Academy training course.

He agreed to a service obligation that was somewhat three-fold, including the agreement to complete the Command Sergeants Major course in the first place-because a course like that has only so many slots and other worthy candidates have to wait for their opportunity. He agreed to meet the minimum time in service requirements upon completion of the training-the payback in terms of time to the Army-and he had to complete the mandatory service requirements once fully qualified-promoted-to be able to retire at his new rank of Command Sergeant Major.

All seemed to be in order and on track until Walz’ unit received a Warning Order in March 2005 to prepare for a deployment to Iraq. For those who never served or are unfamiliar with a Warning Order (or Fragmentary Order,) it is an official notification for mobilization or movement that kicks in scads of mandatory activity that needs to be completed in order to be ready to deploy. When it is an overseas movement, the unit updates all mandatory training and qualifications, shots, disposition of personal effects-such as vehicles, personal goods for those in the barracks, etc. and completes a formal Preparation for Overseas Movement by all unit personnel to get their affairs in order.

It is a very big deal for everybody in the unit and their families, but particularly for the unit leadership.

A strange thing happened on the way through the training cycle for Walz’ unit going through a critical preparation period for deployment where every day is critical, the clock is ticking and there is no time to waste: Walz quit-he retired.

He basically walked away from his leadership position in his unit as the senior enlisted soldier, reneged on his commitment to complete the Command Sergeants Major Course-thereby cheating someone else who could have had his slot had the Army known his commitment was actually conditional-while also walking away from his commitment-his service obligation-necessary to attain his frocked rank of Command Sergeant Major.

Which meant-cut and dry-that although he had served some time as an “Acting Command Sergeants Major,” his retirement rank was First Sergeant/Master Sergeant/E-8 (vice E-9.)

I wrote an article about this “affair” 15 August 2024 to lay out some of the facts and importantly detail what his fellow soldiers-including his Commander, Senior Enlisted Non-Commissioned Officer supervisor, unit Chaplain and others-had to say about the controversy that ensued where Walz basically walked away from his unit after receiving a Warning Order pursuant to deploying.

There was also the matter of his false claims that he maintained for years that he “retired as a Command Sergeant Major,” including a stint in congress where he falsely claimed to be the highest-ranking enlisted member of congress-ever. Taking that honor away from another member of congress-Texas Rep (R) Tony Gonzales-when Walz knew it to be false.

Gonzales was not charitable, kind or forgiving of Walz’ actions, accusing him of stolen valor.

Now a quibbler would say that he did serve as an “acting” Command Sergeant Major for a time-so that was technically the “highest rank” he served at-but given the circumstances-his renege on his commitments and the fact that he did not fulfill his obligations to achieve that rank, one can understand why he was looked at as somewhat of a “crap weasel” for the actions he took to abandon his unit and dodge deployment to Iraq: cause that is what he did.

There is no winning in the military when you have to quibble to make your point: nobody likes or respects-or will put up with-a quibbler. A quibbler is a dog in the Army, although soldiers in general love dogs: but not quibblers…

I made it a point in my original article that matters like these are unambiguous in the military or the government. Nobody is unclear about any aspect of their service because it is all documented to the day regarding their service, ranks, promotions, etc. When you retire or leave service every soldier gets a DD214 which has every aspect of your service documented as the official government record of your service, training, service dates, promotion dates, etc. I happen to have two of them, one for my enlisted time and another for my time as an officer.

In Walz’ case as an acting or more properly a frocked Command Sergeant Major, he never held the rank as he never received pay for it. That would have changed once he completed the Command Sergeants Major course and was officially promoted-“pinned”- to Command Sergeant Major.

The above basically tells you a lot about the guy-the soldier-as a human being. Stuff happens when you are in the military and you have to deal with it. As a former enlisted soldier who eventually went to Officer Candidate School as a Staff Sergeant, I can’t-under any circumstances-imagine receiving a Warning Order to deploy and walking away from the soldiers I was responsible to lead: under any circumstances.

At one point when the Clinton era military was looking to reap the benefits of the peace dividend represented by the fall of the wall and the demise of the Soviet Union, there were a number of options being considered to draw down the force.

A friend of mine received a Reduction In Force (RIF) back to his enlisted grade of SSG, made SFC in short order and continued to march, knowing he would someday retire as an SFC or MSG, but draw his Captains pay for retirement: the highest rank (pay grade) he held during his service. Another friend was the Command Sergeant Major of the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy. He was a Vietnam era MAJ who reverted to SFC and was closing on his retirement at MAJ pay: stuff happens, it is the nature of the business.

In my case-should that happen-I was going to do the same, in the hope that I would become a First Sergeant and lead a company as the senior enlisted soldier. I would have enjoyed that immensely, leading troops is an amazing privilege and experience: there is nothing like it. In the end I would retire at Captains (O-3E) pay.

Having had three years of Company Command and stints as an Acting G-2, as Battalion Executive Officer and Battalion Commander-during a time when I was still the S-3 Operations Officer, I rarely tell this story because it is unbelievable. The XO was pulled to support high level Panama negotiations-he was Puerto Rican and a top Spanish linguist: we had no identified or projected backfill.

After I was Acting XO for about a month, the Battalion Commander was selected to serve as the Equal Opportunity Officer representative for the Army senior enlisted promotion board back in Washington, DC. As the XO, I became the Acting Bn Cdr.

Several days later we received a Warning Order from the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to prepare to deploy on order 500 military personnel, including linguists in the following languages (A, B, C, D, E,) 3 payroll teams including a security force equipped with M-16s or 45 ACP pistols, a liaison element to coordinate with local officials, including police, the Mayor and the community leadership, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on site leadership, and the emergency response team for the Northridge Earthquake, effective on or about 18 January 1994.

So-not to belabor the belaborable-but I was the S-3 Operations Officer responsible to do the mission analysis and prepare the deployment response to TRADOC. I was the Acting Executive Officer responsible to coordinate efforts with the other services and agencies (this was at the Defense Language Institute,)-for instance-Fort Ord finance to draw three payroll packs for the finance teams, and I was the Acting Battalion Commander responsible for-well-all of it!

Did I mention that I had my retirement paperwork approved and was scheduled to retire on 1 March 1994, having qualified for Clintons “Voluntary (hahahaha) Early Retirement Program,” having been passed over for MAJ-1 of 75 in the zone for promotion that were over 18 but less than 20 years? A selection rate for Major of ~62% that year against a typical rate of ~82%?

I never gave a thought to passing the buck to somebody else to handle the deployment planning so that I could continue my retirement out-processing. There were terrible snowstorms back east in the DC area, resulting in my Battalion Commander arriving back at ~1630 the afternoon prior to the day of execution, which started at 0530 with the drawing of weapons and the finance payroll packs for the payroll team. It is admittedly a hard story to believe-even for me-after all these years.

All to say that it says a lot about Tim Walz the man-none of it good-that he walked away from his troops like he did.

Which is why it was particularly ironic to hear Walz explain recently that as governor of Minnesota he had issued an order-a Warning Order-to the Minnesota National Guard to prepare to deploy in support of maintaining peace in Minnesota. Not to support DHS or ICE, not to help take these scumbag criminal illegal aliens off the street that ICE has to track down because the Minnesota police under Walz will not cooperate and help ICE operations in any way.

But-in effect-some type of shady, insinuated effort that smacks of preparing to go against the federal government in the form of ICE, which Walz has plainly stated have invaded-“busted in” to Minnesota. From the piece:

“To Minnesotans, on the National Guard, they’re there to protect you and protect your constitutional rights,” Walz said. “These are our neighbors. They don’t wear masks. They don’t bust in from somewhere else. They’re not here to cause hassles to you or what we saw today, the tragedy.”

Also:

“From here on, I have a very simple message: We do not need any further help from the federal government,” Walz said. “To Donald Trump and [Homeland Security Secretary] Kristi Noem, you’ve done enough.”

The governor called on Americans to come together to confront the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in cities across the country.

“To Americans who are watching this, if you’re in Portland or you’re in LA, or you’re in Chicago, or you’re wherever they’re coming next, stand with us,” Walz said. “Stand with us against this.”

That is what you get when you vote for a man with questionable integrity, ethics, morals and dignity. I don’t know Walz and I am judging him only in regard to his actions. When push came to shove and his unit was activated to deploy, he let his unit down-a key leader in the training and preparation of his soldiers for potential combat-by walking away-retiring-and shirking his obligation the US Army had trained him for in ensuring the soldiers assigned to his unit were prepared for deployment.

He had to be replaced by another soldier who had to get up to speed quickly to backfill Walz’ short notice “retirement.”

Those are the facts. He then made false statements and claims for years that he had obtained a rank that any soldier with any experience and integrity at all knew intuitively was a false claim.

And he is now as Governor exhibiting the worst kind of leadership imaginable, making a chaotic situation worse by kow towing to the mob and failing to safeguard his community by encouraging rioters committing mayhem while bemoaning the chaos that he is encouraging and enabling. How different would the action in Minnesota be if the police were facilitating-aiding-the ICE detainment and capture of these illegal alien criminals?

That is not to mention his previous history failing to protect his state after the George Floyd riots and doing seemingly nothing as fraud was rampant in nearly every federal and state program under his watch.

In the Army vernacular that is a crap weasel: confirmed.
