Lie Detector

The polygraph (lie detector) test does not determine truth – it reveals what one believes to be the truth. Even when confronted with conclusive evidence, eyewitnesses ofttimes believe what they’ve subconsciously convinced themselves to believe. Test-takers can pass this truth/belief test if they truly believe – not merely wish, deem or imagine – what they claim is the truth.  In other words, if a person believes that two plus two equals five, a polygraph test will confirm they are being truthful.

The test registers reactions to questions via minuscule changes of heartbeat, blood pressure and perspiration. These squiggly lines on a graph are interpreted by the polygraph officer. That’s the rub – the machine operator’s subjective decision as to whether one is telling the truth. Though generally accepted in civil trials, they are not admissible in criminal trials except under special court approved conditions.

For employment where honesty is important, such as police jobs, this test is very valuable. Perhaps, all political candidates should be required to take a public polygraph test before election day. Oh wait… if sexual conduct, theft or questions challenging the veracity of campaign statements are part of the test it might be difficult to find candidates.
