Lie Detector, Part 2

During the pre-exam portion the operator says he is only interested in the past ______ years. Each Question Of Interest is preceded by a Control Question. Both the tester and testee must agree to the truth of the CQ. All answers must be yes or no.

CQ: “Is your name __________?”

QOI: “Have you stolen anything in the past ______ years?”

Truthfully, you answer, no. But you’re recalling stealing a candy bar when you were a kid. Everyone has stolen something. The examiner will say the machine indicates you are not being truthful. He’s going to say that anyway, just to see your reaction. Oh yeah, the examiner will lie about the 5-year timeframe. It’s a trick to get you to feel secure that he won’t find out about the murder/rape/theft or whatever you committed more than 5-years ago. Feeling apprehensive?

“Do you live at _________”

“Did you have sex with ________?”

“Are you _____ years old?”

“Did you rape her?”

Other than digital measuring, the test has not fundamentally changed over 75 years. More reliable analysis by facial, voice or AI‑driven systems are not yet perfected. As an applicant for police positions, I have personally experienced polygraph tests.
