Does the busy ant look up and see
A giant man walk by?
Could it understand a house or car or
Airplane if it tried?
Does a fish in an aquarium
Have questions it can ask?
Or will it ever be unable
To know the world beyond the glass?
You say, unlike the ant or fish,
We understand all that we see.
Perhaps then you’ll explain to me:
“What is infinity?”
In the midnight hour we cry out
To understand our plight
Before the silent universe
Extinguishes our light.
Did perhaps the ancient prophets
Know much more than we?
Have our gods of science and progress
Truly set us free?
Can it be a cosmic accident
Has placed us here on earth,
That courage, love, and honor
In the end, can have no worth?
No! Pick up the dusty tablets
Though others fear and hate,
We can only live the life we love
And leave the rest to fate.
If the Creator grants no answers
To these things before we die
Pray we’ll see it all so clearly
And we’ll meet … beyond the sky
