Weather the Storm

This past week our little town got hit by a storm cell that was tornado-like in all but name and dark funnel. It was our hardest hit since the storm of the century, Hurricane Isabel, in 2003. This one was all wind, not water. Living on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay we’re used to getting both. A no name Nor-easter will flood with inches of past records. We weather them all. We weather whatever the storm.

The storms of nature and man will always confront us.

Last week’s afternoon storm was an attention getter. Very big trees went down. In my neighborhood one street and several driveways were blocked by fallen trees. Many roofs were damaged. Several boat houses flattened.

My power was out for over 24 hours. So, the next morning I went out for coffee driving around debris in the streets. My neighbors add the buzzing of many chainsaws to the buzz of the generators a number of folks have. (Not me – yet). Saw people talking to each other and helping one another clean up. Smiles came easily. This is normal. Storm comes. Does damage. You fix it.

In the 12 years I’ve lived in the home on the water I named “Sanctuary” I’ve had water come past the house at least 8 times. My backyard is the Chesapeake Bay.

Frankly, it’s intimidating when the waves break in your yard. When the Florida shutters and roof rattle from horizontal salt water fury. When the water really looks like the North Sea. And, I’ve seen the North Sea when it’s miffed.

And, it’s inspiring to live among people who cherish the beauty of a wide river flowing into The Bay, broad salt marshes, and the far horizon where it’s all water meeting the sky – and stoically accept the dangers as part of the territory.

The Bay or as I call it “the water”, like any Sea, can kill. I know victims and am one person removed from others in the past 35 plus years. People here respect the water.

Moreover, after the storm, everyone gets up and gets to work. Offers to help others. That works well.

Additionally, there’s enough wealth in the community, that homeowners have insurance. When they are hit hard, they call contractors and – Voila! – big cranes, bulldozers, front lifters, and crews of strong men are at work within a day. No one had to wait or expected government to do anything for them. They took care of their property themselves. Immediately.

The utility companies for power and cable had to work their way up the single winding connecting road of the Virginia “neck” on The Peninsula. Repairs were needed all along. My street was last to be served. No problem.

I’m grateful to live here and live among these people.

The way they weather every storm is an apt analogy for what we Virginians and American must do for the manmade storms.

Terrible storms are coming certainly.

It’s only a matter of time until our economy crashes when we fail to end the Federal Welfare State.

Sooner or later the season of strife will sweep across Europe as a Civil War with the Muslim invaders and, possibly, other migrants as well. That will be more than a storm, it’ll be a cataclysm.

Sooner or later, we will have to deal with our Muslim problem – perhaps after an unexpected storm of our own Muslim October 7th savagery.

There’s more turbulence, to put it mildly, with Cartels running Narco-States and the almost inevitable Gotterdammerung Typhoon with the CCP.

May the Good Lord help us weather them all and persevere. Then prosper and let the “land know peace for x years”.

Weather the coming storms well.
