Protestant Christians atone with faith in Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection; Catholics by confession to a priest; Muslims, sans a priestly mediator, resolve not to repeat. Jews by direct appeal to G-d – their Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur.
Some excerpts from the Jewish prayer book, Gates of Repentance:
“For transgressions against God, the Day of Atonement atones; but for transgressions of one human being against another…not until they have made peace with one another. Whether deliberately or inadvertently…I hereby forgive all who have hurt me…may those I have harmed forgive and pardon me.”
“For the sin we have committed against You…. For all these sins, O God of mercy, forgive us, pardon us, grant us atonement.”
“Lord…be with our brother and sisters whose lives are made hard because they are Jews….”
“We pray for all who hold positions of leadership and responsibility in our national life. Let Your Blessings rest upon them and make them responsive to Your will….”
“Our Father, our King…hear our prayer…remember those slain for their love of Your name….”
“Not for ourselves alone do we pray…but for all Your children”
“Hear O Israel: the Lord is our God, The Lord is one.” Amen.
