President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris held a meeting on Thursday with the White House Covid Response Team.
The POTUS took the opportunity to deliver another warning to the dregs of society – the unvaccinated.
Biden warned, “For the unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death – for the unvaccinated. For themselves, their families and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm.”
“But there’s good news,” he added. “If you are vaccinated and you have your booster shot, you’re protected from severe illness and death. Booster shots work.”

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s weekly report has not been released yet (it’s currently 5 am ET on Friday), last Friday’s report showed that 43 individuals had been infected with the omicron variant. Eight of them were unvaccinated, 34 had been fully vaccinated (including 14 who had received booster shots) and one person’s status was unknown.
The report did not disclose if any of the eight unvaccinated people had been previously infected because the CDC does not recognize natural immunity when it comes to COVID-19. If the CDC were actually doing their job, they would reveal this important information.
To be sure, the number of infections in the US will have climbed significantly, perhaps even exponentially, over the past week. The most important data point will be the breakdown of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated.
A study conducted by a team of scientists at the University of Hong Kong was released on Wednesday. It found that the omicron variant “infects and multiplies 70 times faster than the Delta variant and original SARS-CoV-2.”
The study also found that omicron “replicated less efficiently (more than 10 times lower) in human lung tissue than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus, which may suggest lower severity of disease.”
Dr. Michael Chan Chi-wai, the lead researcher, warned against complacency. He wrote that “a very infectious virus may cause more severe disease and death even though the virus itself may be less pathogenic.” Citing past studies that have shown “the Omicron variant can partially escape immunity from vaccines and past infection,” he indicated that “the overall threat from Omicron variant is likely to be very significant.”
According to The Hill, “one symptom is beginning to stand out among the others: Many of those infected have reported having a scratchy throat as opposed to a sore throat.”
On Monday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the first publicly confirmed death of an individual “with” Omicron.
Neither Johnson, nor his office, provided “any details” about this individual, such as “age, vaccination status or any underlying conditions,” according to The Washington Post.
I think we would do well to remember that the U.S. included gunshot, car accident and cancer victims who had COVID at the time of their deaths, on their lists of individuals who had died “with” COVID.
During a visit to a London vaccination site, Johnson warned against complacency. “I think the idea that this is somehow a milder version of the virus, that’s something we need to set on one side and just recognize the sheer pace at which it accelerates through the population.”
Earlier this week, Ben Shapiro discussed a report that had been released by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. It said Omicron cases had been reported in 23 countries. How many cases had resulted in hospitalization or death? Zero.
(He had not heard about the U.K. death yet.)
Amusingly, Shapiro shared that a friend texted him to say, “More people have been killed by Alec Baldwin than have been killed by Omicron.”
More seriously, he brought up something that I’m hearing discussed more and more lately.
Omicron “may be the solution to the pandemic,” Shapiro said. “If it’s more infectious than Delta, and it kills no one, that’s a good thing. That means everybody is gaining natural immunity with asymptomatic or mild infection. So why are we panicking?”
“At a certain point this is no longer about protecting people. … It’s about control.” But we already knew that.

A similar point was made two weeks ago by Richard Friedland, CEO of Netcare, which operates the largest private health care network in South Africa.
Friedland sees similarities between Omicron and what happened toward the end of the Spanish flu pandemic. I posted about this story here.
We have no way of knowing if Friedland, Shapiro and others are correct. But pandemics don’t last forever. And we may be catching glimpses of the end.
