Freedom Under Attack

The First Amendment to our Constitution makes the following statement:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

During the past two years our national economy has come to a halt as measures were instituted to control a virus. Churches were closed, free speech was curtailed, and the right of the people to peaceably assemble and petition the government has been controlled.

In many situations if you did not accept the common narrative you were shut down and given little opportunity to share how you felt about anything. People have been arrested and some now held for almost a year without a “speedy trial” and held in terrible conditions. Yet no one seems to be too concerned.

When truckers to the North of us took a principled stand for freedom we cheered them on, yet we put forth little effort to protect our own freedoms. These are freedoms that men and women have died for during our long history.

Freedom is a strange thing. President Reagan had it right when he said:

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

This speech was made before Reagan was president on October 27, 1964. It is amazing at all that has happened since 1964; we are still free, but out sacred freedoms hang by a thread. They could all fall at any moment.

Everyone who runs for office or serves in the military swears an oath. Here is the oath for members of Congress. Other oaths are similar.

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

It appears that many officials forget their oath just as soon as it is uttered. Many of their pronouncements have strayed from the plain words of the Constitution.

Radical measures were taken to control a virus, a virus little different from that which comes upon us year by year. Measures were taken “to flatten the curve” and keep our hospitals from being overrun. Few hospitals became crowded and some even sent staff home because of a lack of patients.

One man has controlled our lives for over two years; one man, the CDC and the FDA. Under the guise of protecting our health one man becomes a political dictator. And we do nothing.

Between the government and a very supportive press the common narrative left us believing this flu was like the Black Plague, with people dying like flies and bodies lying around unburied.

If people can make you fearful enough they can make you do almost anything. Our collective fear became so great that some masked people assaulted the unmasked because they dared to live without masks.

Churches were closed and non-essential businesses were closed and we were locked in our homes. Some were able to work remotely from home: Many could not. Many businesses closed their doors, some of them permanently.

We are a free people so why do we put up with these measures? It is simple: For a century we have gotten used to being led, so we do not object. When our country is overrun by foreigners we do nothing.

It is time for us as Americans to wake up and take back our Constitutional freedoms. This would be a good year to begin the process.
