The second in my somewhat mini-rant two-parter (19-20) Globalist Part 20 article made the point that this whole lying stuff began with the Obama administration when they adopted a tactic (more properly a strategy-tactics, techniques and procedures-not unlike the military TTP) of leveraging the fiction writing talents of Ben Rhodes (I just hurt my tongue stabbing my cheek) to put together their engagement and narratives for the LSMBTG* to douse the public with fertilizer and manure. They would start with what the desired end state intention was for their messaging, and then create the pieces and parts they needed to fit the narrative, deliver the message and support it. Make no mistake-it was all made up for effect: the more common term when done in dictatorships or autocratic regimes is propaganda.
There are several sad parts about the above that contributed to my cheek stab. One is the idea or notion that the Obama administration made a policy out of coming up with-in effect-fairy tales as a communications strategy to deal with we the people. Two is the fact that the LSMBTG was only too glad to carry the water to publish and amplify those tales-and it is difficult to believe they did not know they were made up out of whole cloth. Three is the chutzpah of Rhodes and crew-who talked and bragged about duping the LSMBTG to carry these made up stories and lies to we the people. Four is that the LSMBTG was almost proud to have been duped if it contributed to the righteousness of the administration actions: none blasted the administration for using them like the lying fools, sycophants and incurious idjiots that they were. Five-and the worst part of this whole sordid spectacle and continuous information operation and TTP that was carried out by the President of the United States-is that people can read this information for themselves-and yet I have friends who think this is right wing conspiracy stuff.
Rhodes has not exactly been secretive or timid about explaining how he went about creating these lies and delusions, nor the methodology he pursued to use and abuse the LSMBTG to get them to carry their water-and not only to carry it-but to amplify and expound upon it-to take on the administration critics for them-to do some of their word fighting, fact checking and conspiracy theory debunking on their own initiative. The distressing part to me is you still have a lot of Obama defenders and apologizers-who act like or believe this never happened-a conspiracy theory. Which is puzzling, troubling and hard to understand, because it means they apparently think Rhodes is lying about it now…or something….
I keep trying to come up with-as my childhood friend used to say-the “worstest” or best examples of this type of stuff-but it defies categorization in that manner because there were so many outrageous malfeasance-based acts by the Obama administration that you have to discuss them in terms like some anti-award show approach, something akin to the Golden Raspberry Awards or Razzies. Try this on for size-(cue the cheezy announcer voice:) the award for the best strategic deception and lying in pursuit of a bad diplomatic initiative: and the award goes to the Iranian Nuclear deal negotiators/JCPOA Team (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) for dealing with hard-liner American haters that they insisted were the opposite to sell their scheme to the public in the execution of American diplomacy.
The Obama administration deliberately lied about dozens-scores of things-big and small, the most egregious being that the Mullahs that ole Bolt Neck Kerry and the feckless dolts (worst kind of dolts) from the administration were negotiating with were moderates from Iran, not the “death to America” crew whose leadership traces back to the internationally illegal act of taking over our embassy and taking the staff hostage.
And a break-break: It’s not that I started out disliking or hating or despising Obama-I’m retired military and was a government civil servant. Politicians-especially presidents-they come and go, but pretty much float above us-they’re people on the wall…but that (dislike and borderline disrespect and hatred) came much later through exposure, experience and his own actions. My thoughts very early-on were that he had shown himself to be no more than a smooth talking-when he had a tele-prompter in front of him-nickel and dime politician-with a very thin resume-the thinnest among the thin-but who through words, deeds-the things he did while an Illinois Senator-how he gained that office-proved him to be an inexperienced, connected with the left, but somewhat cocky-well beyond somewhat-to even consider a run for president.
In the final analysis my thinking was if we were going to select just another nickel and dime politician to be president-we knew it was going to be a backlash democrat year to move away from Bush-and I certainly did not want HRC under any circumstances-but we should at the very least have gotten to pick someone with experience.
I would later consistently refer to him as Obama’Linsky in recognition of his mentor Saul Alinsky and his propensity to propagate all manner of left-handed or back-handed approaches to issues that never quite seemed to favor America. He started early with his cocky-“elections have consequences, I won” to house minority leadership member-our Virginia congressman Eric Cantor-in one of the first opportunities he had to start to work a coalition and “woo”-there’s that word-republicans to move toward embracing some of his ideas and agenda.
He would similarly undermine the idea of working with his former opponent McCain-who expressed concern that the Affordable Care Act was coming together behind closed doors in a massive effort with lobbyists and legislation representatives alike, but without any involvement of republicans. Obama repeated the same “discussion-closing” statement about the “election being over.” Which made it particularly ironic that McCain later was one of the deciding votes that kept ACA from being repealed-after all the problems, lies, “have to pass the bill to know what’s in it blather,” and republican feckless non-stop big talk about alternatives that never seemed to be there when push came to shove: and they puzzle over why DJT had no respect for the lot of them…
It wasn’t just this, or his abandoning the Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA, or his continuous racist seemingly tin-ear commentary that undid nearly fifty years of race relations, while doing absolutely nothing of note to address the ruinous trends in the disintegration of the black nuclear family: nothing. Or even the 21 items I listed in Part 2-nor the scores of other inept and incompetent actions done by the most “scandal-free administration” in American history.
No-I began to dislike Obama’Linsky when Sequestration passed and we started-in maybe 2010-doing the first of what would become a frequent drill of alarmist, dry-run, employee moral crushing drills on who was essential and non-essential in government-treating what we say is our most precious asset and resource-our people-like cattle at the slaughter yard waiting for their number to come up. Just think about a process that continually refines and necks back what constitutes “essential personnel”-by a dialogue about how we need to meet these mostly arbitrary numbers. And each time getting new numbers to meet the administration requirements. If we did one drill, we did at least 4-5 of them in several years’ time.
I worked in Intelligence Production at the time-satellites were still flying, images were being taken, bad guys didn’t understand we might be taking a break because of government budget stupidity-but think of it as the equivalent of a meat packing plant where we were resourced to deal with the slaughter of ~4000 animals per day. Now I’m a simple retired Army guy, but if the start of our conversation is-we will still be slaughtering ~4000 animals per day-I am going to look at you a bit puzzled if your next question is-how many of your people are non-essential-with the implication that they would not be coming to work?
But that is what we did, culminating sometime later-maybe 2014-in a canine equestrian slugfest effort where the National Intelligence Program (NIP) Manager-Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel-the decision maker for the Military Intelligence Program (MIP)-went several times to the Office of Management and Budget to settle who had what authority to furlough civilian servants, who would ultimately lose one day of pay for ten pay periods.
I blame Obama and the congress for their dogmatic BS that resulted in those civilians on the MIP side of the intel house being furloughed.
With my agency being a Department of Defense Support Agency-although with the standup of the DNI, the proportion of NIP funding vice MIP had done a 180 over time, and we only had a few hundred MIP funded salary positions out of nearly 8600-and most of those were simply the luck of the draw. The impact was minimal-unless you were one of the unlucky ones-but we ended up raising money to make up the shortfalls for the personnel furloughed.
That started my hate and discontent in earnest, although most of my ire was directed at our chicken poop leaders who went along with this stupidity-who didn’t say-“I ain’t doing this and you can’t make me: it flies in the face of our entire civilian personnel messaging-I will take the money out of my Director’s reserve funds or contract dollars-but no furloughs.” What are they gonna do, make you furlough people-expose you as a bumper sticker manager-not a leader-and make you look like a fool?
But the real deal that soured me on Obama is when we allowed ISIS to reconstitute-because of our ill-considered withdrawals and troop drawdowns-to the point where they were funding their schemes and operations through captured oil facilities and the sale of the petroleum-becoming self-sustaining. We had done a whole of government effort over a long period of time to get left of the bang on those maniacs-using forensic analysis eventually renamed to Activity Based Intelligence (which I disagreed with-it was information, not intelligence until assessed, but just a personal nit,) but an early-on US Central Command Deputy Commanding General priority that started in ~ 2004. And we walked away from it prematurely-having achieved success-for no damn good reason except political expediency and re-election propaganda.
ISIS began touting the reconstitution of the ISLAMIC Caliphate-started producing what seemed like weekly murderous videos and killing Christians-and yet you had GEN Lloyd Austin down at CENTCOM seemingly incapable-unwilling or unwitting-not call this out for what it was and raise the alarm and put his reputation on the line by declaring that we had a problem ongoing and had underestimated the impact a precipitous and unwarranted withdrawal might have on his command and the area he was responsible for: and it may be apocryphal, but the big rumor circulating within the US government was we could not take out these targets-that we continuously identified-because of “environmental concerns.” And we reported on them-production rates, petroleum income-as if they were one of the legitimate gulf states.
At the same time there seemed to be an elevated priority to report on Israel defense issues and posture. He was Obama’Linsky to me from that point on. ISIS would not be dealt with until the Bad Orange Man took office-somewhat of the reprise of the Iranian Hostage crisis and Ronald Reagan.
Which was a long circuitous path to transit to tell you that Biden has not completed the task of bolstering his team sufficiently to do and pull off the same schtick. With the Biden administration largely reusing much of the Obama administration team, elevating many of those no-accounts and n’er-do-wells into higher positions, there are missing ingredients to the package and the team that are obvious problems thus far. For instance-like him or not-Obama’s strong communications and delivery ability-a great mixture of false enthusiasm and sincerity, straw man examples that made little sense and were often lies-contrasted with only one option that always seemed counterintuitive, given the circumstances-but he knew how to deliver the goods-best when behind the tele-prompter-particularly during the closing years of his administration-and the LSMBTG lapped it up like puppies being fed or kittens getting milk.
And as Obama himself observed, never underestimate Joe Biden’s capability (to furf things up.) My favorite besides the “get off my lawn” inflation commentary (Part 20) was this gem from the campaign trail reported by the Washington Free Beacon, observing that they had the “most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization” in American political history…
When the “big guy” is capable of producing statements like that and you lack the talent and imagination of the Ben Rhodes fictional imagineering (again with the tongue stab) to package the lies into credible stories for the LSMBTG to spread around, we can see how challenging that can be for the Biden administration.
But none of the above is keeping them from trying, as I pointed out in the leak of the security funding information that details how much Pompeo is costing the State Department to protect he and others from Iranian terrorist threats while the administration is back playing footsie with Iran on reviving the nuclear deals. While the Iranians continue to bomb our facilities in Iraq. Which is why one of my favorite Army sayings was “you can’t make this schtick up.”
But obviously no worse than our government being very lukewarm and unsupportive about Saudi Arabia as the Yemenis use all manner of Iranian weaponry to attack them-while the US just can’t seem to be bothered over it-while thinking we can just pick up the phone and talk to them like old pizo’s about oil production if we get in a pinch-although they apparently did not take the call. Oh, my!
A little extract about the Rhodes mythology work-mostly his own thoughts or words-to keep in mind as I close Part 21 (from the Beacon piece-)
In his tale, Iran is recast into a moderate regime through the magic of fiction, while the new villains are all who oppose the JCPOA, recast into warmongers: Benjamin Netanyahu, Ted Cruz, the majority of Americans. As Samuels puts it: “Framing the deal as a choice between peace and war was Rhodes’s go-to move–and proved to be a winning argument.”
And there are no signs of a let up in those sweet little lies….
