The Second Amendment and the rights it conveys, are important. Yet a cool head in the face of danger is the best weapon of all.

A man leaving the Wellston Food Market, a small St. Louis grocery store, who was open carrying a rifle, suddenly felt a gun being held to the back of his head last week, according to KSDK-TV. The victim calmly handed over his gun and jacket and headed to his car.

Unfortunately for the suspect, he hadn’t anticipated that his target had a second gun in his vehicle which was shortly deployed against him.

KSDK reported that a brief shootout ensued during which the suspect, Bobby Lee Booker, Jr., 31, and two bystanders who had just arrived on the scene, both female, were shot. The gun-shot wounds sustained by the women were not life-threatening.

As of last Wednesday, five days after the incident occurred, Booker was still recovering from his injuries in a St. Louis hospital where he remained under police surveillance.

Booker has been charged with “armed criminal action, first-degree robbery and two counts each of unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm. His cash-only bond is set at $500,000.”

According to a “probable cause report,” police pulled into the Wellston parking lot at 2:45 p.m. to find Booker lying in front of the store.

KSDK spoke to Major Ron Martin with the North County Police Cooperative who told them the victim had “fled the scene” and that they “believe a third man came and shot” Booker, and then left the scene himself.

“It was unclear if the three men know each other,” Martin added.

While responding to a call about a bad check at the market in 2019, North County Police Cooperative Officer Michael Langsdorf was fatally shot.

Ironically KSDK reported that Booker’s failed robbery attempt occurred approximately 45 minutes after a memorial service for Officer Langsdorf had ended at Wellston City Hall.

In the twitter post below, a former area resident laments that incidents like this are just part of “everyday life” in downtown St. Louis.

At any rate, as they say, those who live by the sword die by the sword, or at least get pretty messed up in the process.

To Booker, his victim seemed like an easy target. The big problem with open carry is the fact that you’re signaling to everyone within eyesight that you’re armed. A shooter will obviously target this person first, and can make a tempting mark for thugs who want a free weapon as well.

Good thing for the victim, he had planned ahead.

  1. To your point, a shooter may target an open-carry person first – very true.

A shooter may also decide that ‘discretion is the better part of terrorism’ and walk away to find another group, a group they think may not have any weapons and poses no retaliatory threat.

As a personal preference, I do think conceal-carry is best. Doesn’t freak out the progressives who venture from their safe-spaces into public places.
