Popcorn Bags, Shopping Carts, and Cultural Decline

Popcorn Bags, Shopping Carts, and Cultural Decline; Sigh…😠 So my wife and I had a date night tonight and it went great right up until the end. We started by having a pleasant dinner at a restaurant just a half block from the movie theater we would be going to next. After dinner we walked over to the theater to see the new Avatar movie.

Prior to the start of the movie, we had a young couple (late 20s / early 30s) come and sit in the two seats to our left. They immediately started talking throughout the coming attractions and I thought, “Oh no, they are going to be a problem once the movie starts,” but luckily they were quiet throughout the movie and my wife and I were able to enjoy the show. However, as soon as the movie ended, this couple stood up and started to walk off leaving their popcorn bag, empty nachos tray, and a couple of candy boxes in their seats.

I looked at them and said “Don’t worry, I am sure someone will be along to pick up after you.” They just looked at me like I had two heads – so I asked “Seriously, you are not going to pick up after yourselves?” At this point, the couple just turned away and started to walk off while simultaneously my wife was tugging on my arm to get me to exit the row in the opposite direction and telling me to be quiet.

Seeing that my words had no effect on the couple, I acquiesced to my wife’s demands and left in the opposite direction. As we exited the screening room, though, I pointed out to my wife that there were three trash cans at each exit door and at least a half dozen more in the hallways between that room and the main entrance emptying out to the parking lot. She said she did not care; her position is that people nowadays are crazy and will pull out a gun and shoot you for no reason.

I told her that I was pretty certain the entitled little snowflakes sitting next to us did not know how to use a gun and more importantly, I am fed up with self-centered little twits not cleaning up after themselves. So needless to say, the date night did not end on a high note.

Unfortunately, such behavior is a common occurrence and represents a lack of character and a further sign of our societal decay. Examples of such self-centered behavior are everywhere, from people who leave their empty shopping carts strewn about the parking lots of America, to people talking on their cell phones and holding up traffic in the passing lane of every highway in the country.

No matter how many times I witness such behavior, I continue to be amazed by people who consciously choose not to do the right thing, particularly when it would cost them almost nothing to do so.
