“Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times.”
~G. Michael Hopf, Those Who Remain
Hardly the first to note the quagmire brought about by those whose only goals are power and ego, here’s Cicero, On The Republic (Book 5):
“Thus, before our own time, the customs of our ancestors produced excellent men, and eminent men preserved our ancient customs and the institutions of their forefathers.” He goes on in sorrow to say, “For it is through our own faults, not by any accident, that we retain only the form of the Commonwealth, but have long since lost its substance.”
~Translation by C. W. Keyes (1928)
Now men who put desire and ego above good abound in those who govern us. I’d like to see many in both Parties give up power for the sake of the Republic as the “old guard” has seemingly gone the way of indifference if not outright avoidance. And due to Biden’s ineptitude, we have lost allies the world over. We have forsaken sovereignty. We are engaged in a protracted, un-civil war with China and a strident war with Russia.
So who is to maintain watch on those who steer the Ship of State? The Founders tried through the Separation of Powers. But as we’ve seen these branches and their agencies often cannot govern themselves. So perhaps it falls to the Press? The Hutchins Commission (1940) set out to answer if freedom of the press was in danger. Their answer, Yes. Arguably, through misuse by those who controlled the machinery. Sound familiar?
So who then acts as protector and defender of the Republic? The Greek philosopher Xenocrates, when asked what his disciples learned, is said to have replied, “To do of their own accord what they are compelled to do by law.” Until such as those arise, weak men will create hard times.
In sum, is America better off through the policies of Congress and this Administration? Is the world better off since America departed the world stage? The answer comes from the Ancients. And it is…No.
