As a former airport security gate agent, post revamping with the department of Homeland Security’ I marvel at what could happen to the safety of the public when security is tight for every flight boarder except for those who have the great TSA Pre-check pass. 78 dollars, an interview and BAM! You are safe to bypass disrobing belts, shoes, jackets, laptops, certain liquids and long lines. 1
2 TSA Pre-check is becoming more widely used, and you could experience a longer line than in years past. In some cases, the Pre-check line could even be longer than for regular security. When enough travelers get signed up for pre-check privileges, there will be no advantage to paying for it anymore. You will have the option of jumping in the regular Joe blow line of sub human passengers who like me could couldn’t less about the quicker line less traveled.
Security flaws are very concerning when evaluating potential pre-check candidates. 3 There is no screening algorithm and no database check that can accurately predict human behavior — especially on the scale of millions. It is axiomatic that terrorist organizations recruit operatives who have clean backgrounds and interview well. The smart terrorist will have pre-check added to their travel plans.
What does the TSA pre-check interview really check? There are no screening algorithms and a lack of broad database investigations. Myself, having a current security clearance am amazed the vetting of more privileged passengers are allowed to seemingly pay and fly with less scrutiny for the next five years without anything more than a random security clamp
Former TSA Administrator Kip Hawley wrote of TSA pre-check risks in an op-ed. 4“The first vulnerability in the system is its enrollment process, which seeks to verify an applicant’s identity. We know verification is a challenge: A 2011 Government Accountability Office report on TSA’s system for checking airport workers’ identities concluded that it was “not designed to provide reasonable assurance that only qualified applicants” got approved. It’s not a stretch to believe a reasonably competent terrorist could construct an identity that would pass Pre-check’s front end.”
The bar seems to be set pretty low for obtaining a pre-check pass, but remember its not even relevant because anyone can get on a flight anyway if they pay the ticket price. You would think everyone would face the same level of security before entering the passenger terminal. There are two classes of haves and have nots with two different security levels based on money?
The following items are not removed from a TSA pre-check bag in the screening process.5
Does anyone remember the shoe bomber? Are not they supposed to be potentially explosive in the right hands? The liquids have been drilled into our heads for years now. Laptops are supposed to be turned on to see if they are functional and not a dangerous platform for terror? 78 dollars gets you a free pass for five years to subvert standard established safety measures?
Meanwhile you can buy gallon jugs or anything you wish once you hit the terminals. Keep in mind ramp agents and terminal workers have badged, unfettered access to the passenger areas and never go trough TSA to enter the facilities. It would be very easy for some rogue person to enter a restricted area or coordinate with an insider passenger to carry out a nefarious mission.
