It’s likely, despite the election irregularities, that Bob Good will lose his seat in Congress – VA 5 CD. That loss demonstrates the greatest weakness about Donald Trump – which is Trump himself. Trump’s super, uber, worthy-of-its-own clinical category narcissism drives his infantile pettiness. Meanwhile, actually losing the day-to-day demands of being a caring, active Congressman can free Bob Good to be the leader of Movement Conservatism until DeSantis steps up again for a Presidential run in 2028.
Bob will be more of Reagan in this defeat than a Romney or Jeb Bush. The Establishment Republicans want to lead “big tent” Republicanism. Then, they fail. They can’t fool Conservatives for long.
Conservativism is based on principles. Republicanism is about power. For Conservatives, the Republican Party is the means to power. Hard stop.
Trump has no principles, so he isn’t a Conservative. He is taking the Republican Party Left. Or, actually in any direction the polls are leaning. Conservatives supporting Trump, and many do, are being Conned by a New York Liberal. A reality TV huckster. Nothing is more conclusive about Trump being all about Trump only than his attack on Bob Good.
Bob Good is the leader of the Freedom Caucus. The most dedicated defenders of the Constitution in the House – and a few loose cannons are in the Freedom Caucus. They took out Speaker Kevin McCarthy for going back on his word to the Republican caucus.
McCarthy, the biggest Republican alligator in the DC swamp, got people to put over $9m dollars against Bob Good. Most expensive Congressional race in Virginia history. Trump’s attacks on Bob Good and endorsements of little John McGuire aligned Trump with the Swamp, the Establishment, against the Constitutional and Christian Conservatives. Just because Good supported DeSantis in the primary. The Primary is over and Good supports Trump. But, that’s not good enough for Trump.
Back to Bob. I call him Bob because I’ve met him enough times to be recognized by face – at least when we had quick walk by in the halls in October. Dear friends of mine work closely with him.
If Bob has the resources to take care of his family, he could be a national spokesman for the Conservative Movement. Seriously.
He won’t be concerned about pleasing Trump. He can truly speak truth to power. He can talk issues and not worry about the donor class coming after him. He can speak to the values which unite a bit over half of America. He can put the much reviled and often superficially-boring Great U.S. Culture War in the perspective of kitchen table talk.
Bob Good doesn’t sound like William Buckley, but he his speech can bring much greater clarity to Movement Conservatives. That will be especially important if – and probably when – Trump loses to whoever the Dems put up to collect their well-planned vote harvest in November.
It’d be nice if the disputed ballots break Bob Good’s way. Regardless, it would be great if Bob Good becomes Mr. Movement Conservative.
